Gamma
Wyrmwoods
Hailing from Finland, this Atmospheric, Avant-Garde One-Man Black Metal band have previously released two full-length albums. "Gamma" is their third, and contains eight tracks. "Astralanum" leads off the album. From the start, it has a unique sound. The vocals range from guttural utterances to shrieks, and the music has a Progressive edge, much like the band IHSAHN. Eerie keys spring up in the background, and the rhythms pulse with life. "Karamoon" is just a bit shorter, opening with these really cool sounding keyboards. Drums and guitar join in, along with a vocal shriek. The guitar progressions are completely unique. Following this is a strange but pleasing passage of mostly keys, but when he wants to dial up the scary tones, he sure can.
"Alazbo" is a three-minute burner, with guttural vocals and again some really odd chord progressions. I don't think I have heard this type of sound before. The sheer amount of weirdness he works into this song is mind-boggling. "Subterrane" is close to eight minutes in length. Opening with perhaps a bit more of a traditional riff, considering the album as a whole, the vocals are guttural whispers. Jovial key notes juxtaposition with the rest of the music, and the polyrhythms are very noticeable here. The song is both harrowing and inviting at the same time. The sound drops to a crawl at the half-way mark, with just come clean guitar notes. But, the odd sound returns again.
"Koraktor" is under two-minutes in length, featuring this full-on sound, with odd rhythms and even stranger noises he summons from the guitars. The bass can be heard here as well, floating in and out of the song, which sounds like it comes from outer space. "Antigone" is under four-minutes in length. It features some bizarre, atmospheric sounds, before building into the semblance of a song. The background is alive with various colors and shapes that you can see and feel.
"Solanus" opens with a bit of a more traditional Black Metal sound, again, considering the album. Guttural vocals combine with background ambiance that is completely unique. The keys swirl around with the guitars in a dance to the death. "Nix" is a one-and-a-half-minute closing song. Soft, ambient keys combine with background guitars...it sounds like the pulsing from a distant galaxy. What a perfect closing song to this very personal album.
When you step into Nuurag-Vaarn's world here, there is no turning back. He has created this wild and vivid world of another dimension with his creative display of diverse sounds that you have never heard before. Although Black Metal is loosely punctilious in a way to describe the music here, it's so much more than that. The composers vision here I believe was to create something totally out of the box when it comes to the genre, and he met that with marks of utter frightening tones, with at times jovial tones, and the music goes in very unexpected directions. For fans of music who have an expansive and refined taste, this is for you.
