AGES is a Swedish Melodic Black Metal band that mixes beautiful melodies with the coldness of Black Metal, creating a beautiful, dark and aggressive sound. That being said, let's talk about their newest album "Uncrown" that was released on 21st August 2020 through Black Lodge Records. The opening song from the album is "Burn Them" which starts with a beautiful guitar tone that created a cold ambiance that was even more when the bass and drums came in. The vocals are pretty good and they are kind of mixture between Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal vocals, which gave dynamic to the song. "Ilicit State" starts with a bass playing one note and then everything comes in, playing what is definitely a epic guitar riff. This song have different elements and there's also a dynamic change at some points. It is a very beautiful song.
"Herolds of Enslavement" reminded me a little bit of Doom Metal as the guitar riffs and drumming are slower and there are different uses of the vocals here, including the backing vocals. But don't fool yourself as it have the Black Metal influences as well. "A Hollow Tomb" was something that I wasn't expecting to hear. It starts with a beautiful acoustic steel string guitar playing what could easily be something from a Folk Metal band, then the guitars comes in and there are a lot of backing vocals if compared to the other songs. The interlude created a different ambiance that just made the song better. "Dominionism" starts with an overdrive guitar that soon turns into an aggressive Black Metal riff where it is followed by blast-beats, coldness and the growling vocals. I liked the drumming on that song as it changes its dynamic a little bit. "Undivine" have a beautiful melody coming from the guitar and it is very atmospheric as well. The vocal lines are different and they perfectly match the melody that goes on. There are a few keyboard arrangements that made it even more melodic and I loved it. "Uncrown" is the title track of the album and it starts again with the overdrive guitar sound soon turns into a Black Metal riff that is very creative. You can find everything on that song, melodies, keyboards, a good vocal work and different ambiances as well. Cool song.
"The Death of King of Old" seems to be a perfect match for the previous song, just listen to it. "Pyres" is the song that closes the album and it starts with a beautiful acoustic guitar playing a cool melody that is soon joined by the electric guitars that will complete the massive madness that comes from it. I liked how the chorus sounded a little bit like Folk Metal bands and the interlude a little bit darker gave the song a great ambiance. AGES have written and released an album with a lot of different elements coming from the Melodic Death Metal, Black Metal and sometimes even Folk Metal as it was said before. They have mixed different stuffs and created a beautiful album that kept its high grades from the first song to the last.
