Junkowl - Making out with my Death album cover

Released not to long ago in June 2020 we have the debut album from JUNKOWL entitled Making out with My Death. These guys have been tearing it up in Montreal, Canada since 2016. They won the En Route Vers Heavy Montreal competition in 2019 which won them a  spot on the renowned Heavy Montreal metal festival. With all that these guys got the goods to show.

The album opens with "Snakecharmer". Here we get atmospheric sounds creeping in from the start. The band then comes in with riffs that really bring those heavy grooves and vocals that really command the song. Next up is "Quarantine Us All" and this one has a real hardcore punk vibe to it from the start. When then go back to those stoner metal grooves where the pace starts to pick up. The vocals and the guitar really play off of each other on the track "Shake Me". The band sound really tight here and the vocals sound quite sinister. The chorus almost sounds a little like something you would here on a Korn album. "Dead Hooker" has an intro that hits you like a hammer. This song just really brings the heavy.

"Little Scum" starts off kind of slow but has some great bass lines and even uses some clean vocals. This song stands out from the rest on the album but still keeps those heavy grooves and has a cool sounding guitar solo for its outro. This is a really great song. The band in "Crawling up My Feet" just stomps right in with some really catchy riffing. The song really has a bounce to it and a chorus that really makes you (and a live crowd) really want to jump. "Straitjacket" opens with this scream from vocalist Jesse Frechette that is really cool. The song is quite fast paced and could really geta crowd going in a live setting. The guitar here sounds very catchy and the rhythm section great and the vocals really shows the range he has. Another personal favourite on this album.

Onto the last song now and we have "10,000 Vultures". This actually happens to be one of the first songs ever written by JUNKOWL. It starts off a little slow but has those slow but heavy riffs to it. When compared to the rest of the album it really shows where they came from and this song most certainly packs a punch.

The songs here on Making out with My Death have a real heavy groove to them. At times you can even hear a little bit of the band SUPERJOINT RITUAL. Some really cool bass lines present on here too. Every song sounds different from one another which shows the bands range in playing the heavy music and because of that you can hear a little bit of a mix of different genres here in the music.
