Dømt Til Bål Og Brann

KALDVARD is an ancient Norwegian word meaning cold/chilly. This is the band's second release since 2018's debut full-length album "Fossegrimens Pant". That was also release Independently. There has been no band member changes since starting the band.
"Innferd" starts with sounds from samples being broken by the guitars from Kaldr. You can tell that it is building up to something. Which is somewhat how I blends into "Nådeløs I Land", it is not the smoothest blend, but who cares. The vocals from Galge hit hard, but are not distorted. Thank fuck. The build up from the melodies work really well. The harmonies are running well together. I'm sure if you speak Norwegian you will be able to follow the Lyrics. "Shield Wall" the blending of new styles an Old School styles of Black Metal come together nicely here. As this song is in English I can work out most of what is being said, which for me as a fan of Black Metal is good. The melodies being built are brilliant; I would like to see them expand into a fast-paced solo here and there to see the true skills. It slows things down into an instrumental section, which add depth, and creates an atmospheric masterpiece. The vocals kick back in, in a frenzied fashion, but does not seem out of control one bit.
"Dømt Til Bål Og Brann" starts with a sample once more, as it's a Norwegian song, I presume the language will follow but this is just a guess. The vocals kick in with death growls making it harder to follow, but again, it's not in English, so I am at a disadvantage. The samples come back in to break down the tempo. A coarser set of death growls kick in with the drums doing their all to keep balance. The guitar and bass play here is beautiful, creating a further atmosphere around. "Lyderhorn" is another Norwegian song, but the melody is beautiful and more than makes up, for me at least, not being able to understand what is being said. The artistry shown to compose such a song is brilliant. They have their own sound and it suits them, they have not coped anyone else's, sure you can hear aspects of EMPEROR and MAYHEM, maybe even some BURZUM and IMMORTAL here and there, but those are 4 of the biggest and best (2nd Wave of) Black Metal bands, so most modern bands will have patches of sound similar. This sound belongs to KALDVARD!
"The Executioners Diary" starts off with a winding out instrumental, along with some softly spoken word segments. This approach doesn't quite make the one-minute mark before the growls are introduced, but soon the slower approach regains control, seemingly swapping over control at certain times. The idea of mixing it up works wonders for the song; it just fits perfectly into this album. "Tilbake" is the final song of the album. It starts with a major folk sound. This goes on for around two minutes without any vocals, once they hit, they are not the growls we would have expected, but continue with the soft folk stance. The growls do make an appearance, but are used in short doses. This one seems to be slowed down to end the album, which is a bit disappointing. It is not a bad song, but I personally would have wanted the tempo and pace to still be higher to close.
Firstly, no idea who is on the drums, but they did themselves proud. As for the three named band members, they have done themselves proud. A great album, no stupid distortion, it is produced very well. The skills on display, they can make the band proud because this is a great album.
