Eternal Abyss - Doomed to Eternal Abyss album cover

As far as more traditional minded Black Metal goes, this hits all the right buttons.  Intense drums, vocal shrieks and wails, and those famous cold, abrasive Blackened guitar riffs.   If you want something that will provide you with that checklist and a quick blast of depressive Blackened fury, then  ETERNAL ABYSS' "Doomed To Eternal Abyss," won't be great but it will be serviceable. There is little doubt that is represents its style accordingly, but it doesn't do much more.

Unfortunately, there is little in the way of variety and "wow" moments that will hook anyone else's attention.  All seven songs are about the same tempo throughout-the songs are presented as a full speed head, non-stop ride from beginning to end.  Ambient passages, instrumental prowess and ideas that step outside the usual box are not presented here.  Obviously, that isn't the goal of this band, but these are elements that, if used correctly, can make a genre, especially Black Metal, stand head and shoulders above the rest.

I could see this playing in the background during a gaming session or perhaps a Metal themed party or blasting over the speakers at a show before a band takes the stage.  But this isn't something I would set down and absorbed over a period of time-and find myself coming to over time. The first track, "Ancestral Forests," sets you up for what is to come and a decent way to gauge the rest of the album for your personal tastes. I did appreciate how the song grows more intense in the end, finishing out the song a lot stronger than it began.

"Old Times of Blasphemies," is one of the album's stronger points as the riffs are on point, as a display of some of the album's best guitar work.  The drums compliment the tracks overall sound well enough, at least to garner my attention a bit more than the other tracks. "Endless Agony," is, in parts, more of a slow dirge which I found spoke to me more than the faster paced material presented on the album.  The riffs are a bit more melodic on this track too, evoking some much-needed atmosphere.

Ultimately, "Doomed To Eternal Abyss" isn't a bad album. If you're into the second wave style of Black Metal, this is something you might enjoy more.  Personally, it is just too middle of the road for me and lacks the variety required to keep my attention centered on this style.
