Edge of the Blade
Blade Cisco
Hailing from Italy, BLADE CISCO were formed in 2007 after a meeting of a group of friends, sharing the love and common passion for the music of classic AOR/melodic rock acts just like JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, MAGNUM, DEF LEPPARD, and FM. Later the band, composed by Andrea "Zanna" Zanini (Vocals, Keyboards), Valerio "Valle" Franchi (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals), Daniele "Daniel" Carra (Lead Guitar) and Umberto "Gali" Gialdi (Drums) was joined by Michele Luppi, who took the bass duties for three years, before of leaving the band and being replaced by Cesare "Cece" Fioriti. Co-produced, mixed & mastered by Michele Luppi himself, "Edge of The Blade" shows the talent of the band in capturing the classic melodic rock attitude. The album contains eleven tracks.
"Memories" leads off the album, with vocal harmonies and some lead guitar. The sound is thin in the verses but lead to a big chorus like the aforementioned bands they like. Valle's voice is a perfect match for the instruments. "Anything" opens with some keys and then guitars join in. The bass line is a steady thump as is often the case in the genre. It has positive vibe to go along with the longing in the lyrics. "Rain over Me" opens softly, and with a slow-moving pace, along with some emotional peaks here and there. It's a ballad of sorts if you will. "Life is a Lottery" features the steady thump of bass guitars and vocals, with little guitars, until the chorus comes in. It has that combination between hope and longing.
"Hungry for Love" is that track I've been waiting for on the album, where it all comes together. Opening with keys and then a guitar solo, it moves with a faster pace and more energy. Valle snarls a bit here giving the song that edge that I was talking about. "Grey" is another soothing song with great vocal harmonies and some real emotional accents. The chorus is very easy to sing along with. "Invisible to Me" is tender song that uses a perfect combination of keys and guitars and features a really nice guitar solo where Daniel cuts loose for a spell. "My way" closes the album. It's a three-minute acoustical guitar song with charming melodies and Valle's most tender voice. It's the perfect ending to a really strong album.
For me, the high points where the emotions that the band was able to extract from the songs and the carefully thought out melodies. At times, some of the songs were just a bit thin, however. If they could thicken up some of the quieter parts, it could really pack a punch. As it stands, it's a good album but it could be better, and they certainly have the chops to pull it off.
