Hailing From Baltimore, Maryland, WHISTERIA COTTAGE celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Heathen by remastering it and releasing their debut and one and only release. Their Melodic Deathcore sound is one we do not hear much anymore. Has this style lost its way in Deathcore or is it as strong and awesome as it used to be? Let us listen and find out.
"Pathology of Our Existence" has a sample from American History X as the intro, from there it kicks off with full power. Vocals are in true Deathcore style, able to understand most parts after listening to it a few times. The instrumental play is so fluid within itself; it creates a melodic harmony, which sits in the sound perfectly. 10 years ago AS BLOOD RUNS BLACK were killing it like this, this is better. It's aggressive, but has a great balance."Human Disfigurement" retains the aggressive outbursts from the off. The instrumentalists hold their own beautifully; they show off their own talents, but also enhancing each other's. This will get the heads banging. Vocals have controlled the tempo perfectly, with the high and low sections running in harmony within the immense workings of the rest of the guys. It has a great sound, so catchy. I could have easily listened to this song go on another 2 or 3 minutes
"Confined" continues the sound of "Human Disfigurement", showing no real stop in one sound to another. The main reason you know it is a new song is the level of aggression has peaked in vocals. It has been executed in style. This song breaks down the tempo to perfection, allowing build-ups to create harmonies that will get you banging your head, as I was writing this. The song slows down towards the end, but not enough to lose effectiveness, and also doesn't have any pointless Deathcore noises that are inserted by many bands just for the sake of it, like DESPISED ICON do with pig noises. "Failure to Succeed" keeps the slower pace up, but also has the aggression up to full volume, not sure, how this should be able to work, but it does. Not the longest song, but takes elements from the album thus far into creating a great filler song. Vocals are powerful still and there is no signs of slowing down to a boring level. Controlled perfectly.
"Baled to Death" is belting out Death growls from the off, but as they fit into the instrumental melodies, they work with ease. There are once again slow breakdowns, but these work to build depth along with the riffs being unleashed to devastating effect. Raw and aggressive vocals complete the amazing sound. "Enticement" is a pit opener as a start. It's that spiraling sound into vocals that cause the sound to remain controlled, then unleashed with similar sounds and effect shown in "Baled to Death". It is done brilliantly. For me, it could have gone on longer, but the ability to make us want this, is in itself a real skill.
"Devour Thy Throne" is another aggrieve vocal starter, with the drums hitting hard to keep up the balance and effect. The instrumental harmony is in full effect here. The breakdown allows emphasis on vocals midway, it shows a control on the song and then the ability to add higher guitars like WE BUTTER OUR BREAD WITH BUTTER do so effectively. It's a Deathcore masterpiece. "Heathen" starts with full vision of Mike A on the drums, he is giving this his all. The rest of the band create a slower, thicker sound which some Sludge bands do, it works to full effect, before Mike hits his drums into a tempo followed in suit by the full power of the rest of the Band, a perfectly executed change in pace and style. This song is done so well; you find yourself at the end anting more again. The end will have your head banging. Please say it wasn't just me
"Your Cremation, Our Reclamation" picks up pace once more, they are not having one style dictate the album. The vocals stance changes, as it has all album, but the change works within the other. The buildup, instrumentally, is perfect. No way can I disapprove these songs; I just want them to go on longer so we have more time with these awesome songs. So glad this album was remastered. "A Misconception" shows the slower controlling skills in the instrumental play hitting targets again. The vocals haven't slowed down or become in anyway less aggressive, but it's all in tune with the melody. These guys have executed every change perfectly. The tempo picks up from all, and it will lead to more head banging and feet tapping. The skills to add higher pitched vocals and guitars to change the depth is phenomenal, then they change it back again and it's still an amazing sound
"Your Broadcast Is Interrupted" is the final song. Fuck. That low Death growl into the low vocals to start is a stroke of genius. The instrumental skills are still in full force, they are not holding anything back what so ever. The heads will continue banging throughout. The vocal aspect holds the song together in its own way, but the instrumentals are just as important. Neither take superiority over the other
This album summed up in one word: Unskippable. It makes you wonder why they only ever released the one album. The sound is brilliant; the melodic side of Deathcore shows a true skill, not just screams and sounds, but technical skills and composure with the balance. Amazing. Could this be what was needed to get these guys back in the studio? I fucking hope so!
