Since JUDAS PRIEST set the basis for a modern way of traditional Heavy Metal at the end of the 70's, and METAL CHURCH set the things on fire back in the 80's, many bands appeared to make the mix of fine catching melodies inspired by names of the past with the modern aggressive feeling from their times. And let's say that the Swedish quintet FREAKS AND CLOWNS are here as an heir of such way of making music, as their debut album, "Freaks and Clowns", is here to prove.

This freak show unleashed for the five clowns is a wise and greasy mix of modern sonorities with traditional Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, with clear influences from USA Metal from the 80's. The final result is a musical work that is melodic and catching, with some catchy choruses, fine instrumental arrangements, but with a work on the vocals that is harsh than the usual (not grunts or shrieks, just a normal voice using aggressive tunes). Yes, it's different, personal, but accessible for any Metal fan that really loves the genre.

The sound quality of the album is really excellent, balancing the rough aggressive outfit of the band's music, but in a clear and modern way that has a melodic impact. Yes, everything can be understood clearly, so the fans will absorb it clearly. "Freaks and Clowns" doesn't sound as first release, because they seem to be experienced enough to be great. The oppressive weight and charming melodies of "Demons in Disguise" and "Into the Ground" (the excellent slow tempos allow the listener to understand the melodies, so bass guitar and drums are in great shape on both), the easy and accessible hooks presented on "The Battle of Love and Trust" (amazing vocals, and a chorus that is easy to catch and sing along), the mastodonic weight presented on "Freaks and Clowns" (another excellent set of melodies is presented on this one, with great vocals and guitars) and on "Heartbreak City", and the brutality shown by the slow tempos and bitter ambience of "King of the Sun" are their best shots for a first hearing, but on the second, the entire album becomes a very good work.

As I mentioned above, the quintet shows a great form of music that will evolve and grow, but for now, "Freaks and Clowns" is really a fun album for Metal fans. And for those who want something slightly different from the usual, FREAKS AND CLOWS is the band you were looking for.
