Cold Front Rising

Sweden produces plenty of ENTOMBED clones, but musicians usually like to copy the sound of the classic group's first two albums. CRYOSHOCK are different because their sound is more in line with ENTOMBED's Death 'N' Roll era. In April of 2019, the band released their second EP, "Cold Front Rising," a release that was apparently "recorded in Martin's garage."
For being recorded in a garage, the production is actually very good. The vocals are very full, the guitars are on the softer side while maintaining heaviness and the bass is audible. What really stands out are the drums because of their full sound, especially in the bass drums. In fact, these drums are some of the best produced drums I have ever heard.
Outside of the remarkable production for a garage, the actual music is not as impressive. "Through the Wastelands" is notable because it alternated mainly between two riffs, creating a track that is limited and standard. The track starts with a dissonant riff that is very nice, but this riff is repeated several times later. This is good, but it gets old by the third repeat, therefore it would be very beneficial to these guys if they experimented with the riff more to give the song another dimension.
"Cut You in Half" has a large songwriting flaw. Near the end of the very short track is a new riff that abruptly interrupts the main riff. This new riff is very poorly written, ending with a sustain each time it repeats. When a sustained note is used like this in extreme music, it hardly ever sounds good. It doesn't sound complete, and it ruins the flow.
While there are some issues with songwriting, there are some things that CRYOSHOCK do right, especially voice-overs. "Decimation Process," while being one of the better tracks on the EP, includes a voice-over near the middle of the track that is backed by the bass guitar, sounding impactful and creating an image that is memorable. This same method is used at the very end of "Day of Disease," but it is backed by the screaming guitars that conclude the track.
Overall, the newest CRYOSHOCK EP is nothing special. It has quite a few flaws scattered among the tracks, but the album still has moments that are better than others. There is potential with this band, but there is still work to be done, especially in the realm of songwriting.
