Unleash the Storm
Abyssus
The fusion between Death and Black Metal elements began in the 90's, and brought into the Metal scene a brutal, explosive and aggressive form of music. It bound together the oppressive atmosphere of Black Metal with the brutal grasp of Death Metal. Obviously there are those that became giants, other ones who are just copying what others, and those that play in a very good shape (and that deserve more attention from the fans). In this last group is the Greek quintet ABYSSUS, which comes with a very good work, this five track EP called "Unleash the Storm".
Their musical work is based on Old School approach, with that crude and oppressive form of music based on names like DEATH, MORBID ANGEL and others. Obviously you won't find something really new on the EP, but the band's musical personality shows strength in their songs. Their hooking approach on musical brutality will seduce you all. Recorded at Ignite Studio, with mixing and mastering being done at Unreal Studios, the sound quality of "Unleash the Storm" is very good to their work. They try to get some of the rawness and filth from the 90's, to sound organic, but without denying the fact that the fan must understand what they are playing. Of course it is truly heavy and aggressive, as extreme Metal fans love.
On "Operation Ranch Hand" (a brutal and fast song, filled with good musical arrangements, great riffs and a charming energy) and "Unleash the Storm" (what lovely tempo changes done by bass guitar and drums) are their own songs, showing what they can do. And on their versions for old Metal hymns as BATHORY's "Rite of Darkness", VENOM's "Warhead" and MANILLA ROAD's "Open the Gates" are fine homages to their musical influences, besides their approach on them is extremely personal. They are a very good name, and I hope that "Death Revival", (their forthcoming album) will be as good as "Unleash the Storm".
