The Courettes - We Are The Courettes album cover

Well, there are musical expressions that we will never understand. It's not for us to question why some bands prefer to make their music in certain ways. But as fans of music, we have the right to say "I like it" or the opposite. As a writer, I have to go deeper on my analysis, what makes me wonder why the Danish/Brazilian duet THE COURETTES plays such form of music on "We are the Courettes".

It's a strange mix of earlier Punk Rock with Rock 'n' Roll influences, sounding nasty and aggressive, but with tender melodies on simple harmonies. As a duet, there's no bass guitar, so their music sounds hollow all the time. It's crude and nasty, but melodic. The same formula we all heard many times before, and in a better way. Obviously, the idea of the band was to have a raw and organic outfit for the album. The energy flows without problems, but I can't understand why such filthiness must be in these high levels. Their musical work is not hard to understand, but it could be way better with a cleaner sound quality (besides the emptiness of the absence of bass guitar would be more evident).

Musically, their songs aren't so bad, but they aren't contributing with something that is personal. It's not a carbon copy, but the feeling that we heard it somewhere before haunts the listener. Some melodies that are easy to understand (and that you won't forget) are presented on "Hoodoo Hop", "Time is Ticking", "Nobody But You", the nasty Rock 'n' Punk "T-C-H-A-U" (a Brazilian informal expression for "Goodbye"), "Voodoo Doll" and "Boom! Dynamite!", but they still need to improve a lot. The duet is far from the ideal. It's a work for those who loves nasty and crude Rock, but without compromises.
