FAAL was established in 2005 in the south of the Netherlands. The band's music is mainly doom-metal oriented with touches of black-metal and post-rock. Their first album "Abhorrence-Salvation" was released in 2008 at Ván Records. This album received many good reviews, which resulted in a sold-out first printing. Besides their recordings, they also started to build a good live reputation and shared stages with ATARAXIE, ISOLE, FORGOTTEN TOMB, THE OCEAN, OCTOBER TIDE, MOUURNING BELOVETH, and others. In 2011, FAAL went back to the studio to record their second full-length called "The clouds are burning". "The clouds are burning" was recorded by FALL and Harry van Erp, between March and May 2011.

The album was mixed and mastered in collaboration with Greg Chandler at the Priory Recording Studios in Great Britain. It was great to be involved in the mixing and mastering of FAAL's album - a truly innovative and experimental piece of music" (Greg Chandler). This resulted in a massively sounding album consisting of four tracks, which dealt with subjects such as the human psyche, the state of being tortured, and the road to madness and inner conflicts. After the album was recorded the line-up changed drastically over the next years, with only Pascal and William remaining of the "Clouds"-era. In 2014, FAAL teamed up with EYS OF SOLITUDE and THE DROWING for a mini-tour of England, Holland and Belgium. During that tour, the first plans were hatched to release a split.

"Grief" is dark from the start; you can feel the deep Doom aspects. There is the idea of Funeral Doom, but where many other bands distort their sound for ambience and authenticity, FAAL do not, they keep to their own dark styles. The title works, the song is deep in atmospheric melody, without losing itself it several possible genres, the backing feels like a passion or loss maybe the defining factor in pushing this opening song through the gates. There is a few deep deathgrowls, just adding to the melody, but keeping the tempo at a well-balanced pace. The song remains true to itself

"No Silence" is another darken sense of morbidity. The low deathgrowls balance out the deep play of the melody. It remains true to the Death Doom aspect. I have reviewed several Death Doom albums, and this fits the mold perfectly. Its dingy and dark, but remains true to itself in a way that shows FAAL know what to do without having to mix it up just to create an album. The atmospheric styles to the melody allow the impact of Funeral Doom to be made aware it's trying to peak through the slow melody, along with the deathgrowls being held on brilliantly. The beat picks up mid-song showing the Death Metal influences in raw prime, this being the key ingredient in this tune.
