Paradox of Existence
Purtenance
I'm counting on my fingers the days when this trend of Old School Metal will end. The main reason is that we all are truly full enough with clones. Every single day we have to deal with bands that don't have a single trace of personality in the music they are playing. Once more: we don't need a new ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, or any other band that exists or already existed. They did their work and left their legacy to the future on the discs they recorded, and no one needs to carry on with their musical ways. If you need something in this way, just hear bands as the Finnish quintet PURTENANCE, a veteran on Death Metal that comes with their latest release, the EP called "Paradox of Existence".
This is a 4-track EP that shows an Old School Death Metal that will remind you of the English and Swedish Death Metal schools. Brutal and nasty, raw and aggressive and with no trace of melody, they are playing this same style since 1991 (ok, the band entered a hiatus from 1992 to 2012). Of course we feel the lack of something more particular, but the way they play is honest and filled with energy. It's not the best thing of the world as well, but this EP is really good. The sound quality is clear and modern, but keeping the same Old School musical energy that all known from their work. Everything sounds clear and fits in the way they need, but keeping that rawness and filthy atmosphere that Death Metal must have. Maybe these aspects are linked to the brutal tunes used by the band to records each musical instrument.
Having an insight on the aggressiveness of slow tempos on "In the End Only Death Will Remain" (where very good riffs are shown), the vicious energy of "Vicious Seeds of Mortality" with its nasty guttural grunts, the very good rhythmic changes of "Paradox of Existence" (a very good work from bass guitar and drums can be heard), and he fast and suffocating atmosphere of "Nekro Orgy", where the last part of the song shows a slow work with fine grunts and screams. "Paradox of Existence" shows nothing original, but is still good.
