Voodoma - Gotland album cover

Since the 90s, when Doom Death Metal evolved from something more elegant and introspective, many bands of the so called Dark Rock with influences of bands like MY DYING BRIDE, MONNSPELL, PARADISE LOST and ANATHEMA on their more introspective and dense moments (but not as heavy and aggressive as on their earlier works). Sometimes, we can hear good works from bands of this genre, as the good work from the Düsseldorf based band VOODOMA. The quartet new album, "Gotland", is really very good.

They make that introspective and musically accessible form of Dark/Gothic Rock with some Doom Metal influences, almost Pop in some moments, on other with some Industrial touches, but always elegant and dense, always charming and introspective (even on the more aggressive parts, as we hear on "Ghostlight". We can say that they are a Metal band in the deeper sense of the term, but who care about it if they are as good as they are? The sound quality is really very good, because its focus is to create a good blend of Rock 'n' Roll raw energy with the very good dark aesthetic insight that the band needs. Of course, the tunes of the guitars are nasty and aggressive, to give the necessary power to the music, but the keyboards parts make everything sound melancholic and beautiful.

All their songs are excellent, and the special presence of Maike Flüshöh (of MAYZE), Ollie Bölke (SEELENSTURM), and Bernemann, the six strings master from SODOM. So we can say that "Gotland" is a very good album, having on the beautiful and intense "Shine" with its fine keyboards and excellent clean vocals, the influences of Industrial Rock that fill "Love is Falling", the hooks and excellent tempos of "Ghostlight" (and what a very good chorus), the bitter slow guitar riffs and excellent female voices of "Arise", the mix between catchy guitars and fine keyboards parts of "Painful Lies", the excellent catchy melodies of "World Roulette" and "What We Die For", and the good harmonies shown on "Way of the Damned" can be said as their best moments.

VOODOMA is a very good band, and it's not strange to know that they played in great festivals as Wacken and Castle Rock.
