Infernal Majesty - Unholier Than Thou (Reissue) album cover

In the past, many bands released albums that disappeared in the sands of time. The main question when we deal with a reissue is: does the album or the band deserves such chance? In the case of the Canadian quintet INFERNÄL MÄJESTY with their 1998 full-length "Unholier Than Thou", it really deserves a deeper analysis before we could say the sentence.

The band main style is a Death Metal in Old School format that is near from Thrash Metal. It reminds the same style from DEATH on the bands earlier works, but with a fine technical work on the instrumental parts. It has that amount of energy that can bind the fans to the band's musical work, but besides the band has a very good identity, you will not find something different from those days. The sound quality of the album is what we could expect from an underground band on those days: raw and moldy. But this is not a great problem, because we can understand what they are playing, and it is heavy, besides the instrumental tunes could be far better than we hear on the album. Pierre Rémillard on the mixing and Tom Baker on the mastering did good jobs on the conditions they had in those days.

Musically, we can hear that "Unholier Than Thou" has a particular appeal, and the music of the band is truly good. The good musical technique and vocals shown on "Unholier Than Thou", the heavy and intense grasp that "The Hunted" has due its fine work on bass guitar and drums, the bitterness that fills the slow aggressive tempos of "Black Infernal World", the fast guitar riffs and good solos shown on the fast "Where is Your God" and on the slow "Death Roll", and the brutal slow attack of "The Art of War" are the finest moments on the original album. But this version has live versions for "Birth of Power & Unholier Than Thou", "Where is Your God", "R.I.P. & Night of the Living Dead", "The Hunted" and "S.O.S.", all of them from the live album "Chaos on Copenhagen" (except for "S.O.S.", that isn't on the original tracklist, so we assume that it's a track that was left out of the album).

Answering the question asked in the beginning: the final result points that "Unholier Than Thou" deserves a new chance, so listen to it!
