Formed in Hobart, Australia, TABERAH have been operating since 2005, having released three full-length albums: "The Light of Which I Dream" in 2011, "Necrorancer" in 2013, and most recently "The Sinner's Lament" in May 19, 2017. The album in question starts with title track "Sinner's Lament" sounding rather like AMON AMARTH minus the harsh vocals, that is to say a blend of power metal and melodeath - but ends up covering a number of textures. Overall, however, this song and indeed the album writ large is traditional power metal with some more interesting melodies with more of a heavy metal and sometimes melodic power metal flavor, with a couple callouts to other groups. For example, "Wicked Way" has a particular kind of harmonized vocals that are usually the exclusive domain of ORDEN OGAN. The production (and indeed most everything else minus the vocals) on "Harlott" reminds me a lot of IRON SAVIOR, particularly on the "Battering Ram" album. After a couple of decent but largely forgettable tracks, "Crypt" follows the MYSTIC PROPHECY mold, particularly with the artificially quiet original iteration of the verse riff. "Heal Me" sounds a lot like GALLOGLASS, with its power-thrash sensibility balanced by a strangely ethereal chorus.

"The Final March of Man" is definitely the standout track. It begins with a suitably epic intro (with well-applied keyboard touches) that sounds far more like typical Euro power metal fare and transforms into a tastefully melodic mid-tempo riff. Unfortunately, the drawn-out nature of the ostensibly-rousing "Beware, beware" that forms the basis of the chorus sucks out the otherwise punchy nature of such a structure. That said, the song provides by far the widest variety in texture, including some enjoyable clean work.

The album is pretty solid. Even the tracks I'd characterize as weaker are still pretty solid; the chorus on "Child of Storm" feels a bit tepid but the ICED EARTH riffs are fun. There's a good variety here, more so than on most traditional power metal albums, but the ideas could have been more strongly executed. Overall, it's an important release that showcases the potential breadth of creativity within the largely stagnant waters of traditional power metal.
