Dawn Of Leviathan
Furyborn
UK's FURYBORN is a Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore act spawned in 2010 in Poole, England. Hitting the live scene in 2011, the band cut their teeth on the road, to critical acclaim as a live act. They released their debut EP "The Reaping Of Our Days" in 2012, and now present their debut full length "Dawn Of Leviathan," set for release in July, 2017. The album contains ten tracks. "Second Sun" is a brief opening instrumental. It builds slowly with the sound of muffled voices in the background and the sounds of gunfire, segueing into the title track, "Dawn Of Leviathan." It's a fast moving track, fueled by angry Death vocals and drum work that could bring zombies up from their graves. The clean vocals and guitar melodies are a nice contrast to the abyssal heaviness of the other sequences. The piano and strings that bring the track to a close are a mark of beauty. "The Reckoning" is brutal and weighted in the verses and then the chorus welcomes the sweetness of melody with the clean vocals, and the intricate guitar harmonies in the bridge.
"Exult In Extinction" is a stand-out track on the album. This song goes straight at your throat like a rabid dog who has not been fed in days. The melodies they work in are not in clean vocals or choruses this time, but are lurking in the background enough that you know they are there. "A Fault In Our Design" is another bruiser that is carried from intricate guitar work, a skull-pounding rhythm and super-angry vocals. The lead guitar led bridge is brilliant. It cuts the brutality just long enough to let you breathe and soak in some harmonies. "Life Begins" has a commanding opening riff; assertive and lively. The chorus brings some emotional concord that balances the song and allows it to resonate on your palate. Although "Deep Rising" is very brief, I like the atmospheric opening, with a meaty bass line and lamenting clean vocals. It's really quite lovely and an alternative from some of the heavier tracks that came before.
"As We Burn" is a lovely title for a closing song...and in many ways a great, culminating track to stamp the album as a whole. It is oppressive and graceful at the same time, with another good combination of the elements that make this genre so pleasing. Overall, this is a convincing full-length debut from a band that knows how to bring the weight and fury of Death Metal, while embracing harmony and melody within that context. The band has conviction in their craft and the album reflects what was surely tireless work and attention to all the details that bring about a product you will enjoy.
