When I think of DSBM, one of the first bands that comes to mind is the mighty SHINING, or LIFELOVER. Well here is a band from Australia who are going to leave their mark in the Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. Meet CANCER. You might say, Who doesn't know the band CANCER? This is a different band calling themselves CANCER. You might also ask, why would a band call themselves something like that? It is because "We are all Cancer." Whether you like or not, do some research on our species. It will begin to make sense.
Any who, I am merely here to review the album, not philosophize over it. So Ladies and gentlemen, "Terminal" has been stillborn. This EP seems to be the first release ever from these morbid chaps. I could compare to the Likes of the aforementioned acts, but to do so would not be entirely accurate. The certainly do hold within the limits of their subgenre, but they spice it up a bit. A lot of the vocals are harsh growls, or a high pitched scream that sounds familiar if you are used to "Satanic Black Devotion" by SARGEIST.
The music on this album has a sense a sweet darkness to it. This isn't your atypical blast beat driven, brutal assault of black unholiness, for the most part. It is not all sad depressive sounds either. Overall, Interesting, is the best word I can choose to describe this experience. The mix of ambience and brutality definitely help shape this into a well-rounded Black Metal album. Honestly to some it may not be what you want from you BM, but true discerning Black Metal connoisseurs will get it.
Coming from Australia is also neat, as I don't typically find these kinds of bands from the area. Not that they don't exist, I just rarely find them. I think that their Metal scene should proud of this band. Keeping in mind, that this is the first release, I recognize great potential. I think as the years pass and they keep doing their thing, that they could sky rocket in the DSBM scene. The musicians are obviously talented, and driven to create their unique art.
For fans of SHINING, LIFE LOVER, or even SARGEIST, possibly even BURZUM. I recommend checking these guys out. I don't think any of you will be disappointed.
