I always thought of Belgium as the land of delicious chocolate and warm waffles period, nothing more, nothing less. As ignorant and full of preconceptions as I am, I was this close to call it a pass on BLACK MIRRORS. If I would have done it, it would have been one of the biggest mistakes of my life, after updating my phone to iOS7 that is, but that's another story. If JANIS JOPLIN, JACK WHITE, ANOUK, NIRVANA and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE ever had the chance to breed, this band would have been their favorite creation: Belgium's answer to pretty much every Rock band out there, BLACK MIRRORS, manage to gather an endless amount of influences which have been ruling the Rock N' Roll universe for decades. This one's a keeper, and with good cause BLACK MIRRORS just recently signed a worldwide deal with Napalm Records!
The title track "Funky Queen" is a straight-up female fronted alternative funky tune, with catchy riffs and a hypnotic voice. Marcella hits every single note beautifully. With "Kick Out the Jam" we have a more garage sound to work with heavy grooves and great chorus. "The Mess" is a shift from the previous track. I believe it to be hit-or-hit with the audience, you cannot stop but falling in love with it. It is much slower than the previous ones, and the remarkable groove that the band is clearly good at, appears only on the final notes - which makes them sound unique, and not repetitive. "Canard Vengeur Masque" a doozie of a title, is an equally solid and impressive tune, but coming to its end, had me craving for more.
If you are an old school rock'n'roll, Woodstock fan, you might not want to pass on the delicious band that BLACK MIRRORS is, forget the chocolate, give me some "Funky Queen" and I am happy. If you don't believe me, catch them on tour with HORISONT - I know I will!
