Stefan Berggren - Stranger In A Strange Land album cover

Stefan Berggren, a Swedish musician, has been in the rock/hard rock sing for thirty years playing with everyone from members of WHITE SNAKE to DEEP PURPLE.  This is his first solo debut and it's a strong first attack right out of the gate.  The aspect I noticed immediately was Stefan's vocal delivery. It is somewhere between soulful blues ala Paul Rodgers and Ian Gillian.  He delivers the somewhat contrived lyrics with such emotional hooks and expressive crooning that you won't really mind too much. Musically, the songs remind me of the singer-songwriter genre such as Jason Isbell, although there aren't any country rock elements here.  The songs don't have any particular arrangements from one to the next; each one is very self-contained and has its own sound.  They feature a lot of interplay between acoustic and electric guitar, giving the overall sound a slight folk rock flavor to them but, at the end of the day, this is definitely a straight up rock album.  The title track features some awesome keyboards that run the gauntlet from 80's to spacey trips. The second track, "Coming Home" is probably the best on the album, featuring a solid base line, clever drums, and guitars weaving and out from each other with riffs, solos, and harmonies.

"Ain't Got No Woman" is another highlight.  The drums both pound and bounce at the same time while keeping a steady woman.  The random guitar licks are really great and the main riff rolls around the song, taking your head with it. "Long Gone Down The Road" is a slower paced song but has a catchy chorus and some great guitar driving by some decent acoustics, bass, and drums.  Stefan's expressive vocals really shine through here as well, complimenting the musician ship of the song. If you like modern day rock or singer-songwriter I would highly suggest this album. It's just laid back enough to enjoy on a quiet winter night and still rocks enough to want to listen to on the way to work.  "Stranger In A Strange Land" is a very well done, balanced album.
