Scaling Up

As the former guitarist of the classic group EUROPE (yes, that's "The Final Countdown" EUROPE), it is easy to predict the kind of music that KEE MARCELLO makes; melodic, groovy, almost pop-level catchy Hard Rock.
Nothing about "Scaling Up" sounds like it should be taken seriously. The whole thing drips and oozes with old school fun and nostalgia for a different time. "On the Radio" blends a joy for music with a bittersweet desire for what once was. The bigger songs are written for a screaming audience whilst the more "balladish" ones are in desperate need of a sea of raised lighters. Marcello's signature guitar playing is by far the most prevalent part of the album; the note choices he makes are far from the obvious, giving some of the solos an unusual quality that occasionally crosses the line between interesting and plain wrong.
Many of the songs explore not only the straight-up Rock of Marcello's playing (opener "Black Hole Star), but also the bluesier side as well. "Fix Me" opens almost like a swampy blues shuffle before becoming pure 80s cheese; and this is what is expected of this release. All through the 12 songs the main stylistic requirement is an 80s melodic AOR styling. It feels like this could have been released 30 years ago. Everything is melodic, with lots of harmonised choruses, big keyboards and over-the-top solos. "Scaling Up" has a good range of ballads and anthems, with plenty of variety to keep each song sounding identical.
There is nothing new here. Everything is completely 80s. So if that's not your cup of tea, then this isn't for you. However, the authentic nature and pure fun of "Scaling Up" is a testament to the big revival of this genre. Give it a go, there's a cross-generational aspect to this record that would allow anyone to enjoy it.
