It takes all sorts to make up this world and then you have a bunch of Finnish blokes playing Heavy Metal and Rock songs in a Bluegrass vein, who take it to another level! In a world replete with cover bands and tribute bands, the cleverly and funnily named STEVE 'N' SEAGULLS, are among a few other tribute bands that have made a name for themselves. In a town three and half hours away from Helsinki called, Jyväskylä, is where the band members convened to study at university and study music. In the year 2011, they formed the band and decided on the style of music that they would play. They released their debut effort, "Farm Machine", that featured covers of AC/DC, PANTERA, and IRON MAIDEN, among others. This album continues in the same vein with covers of METALLICA, MEGADETH, NIRVANA, and GUNS 'N' ROSES. There is an element of fun and light heartedness in the way the band has arranged and sung the songs. The band has tried their best to keep the songs as close to the original as possible, while incorporating odd and unexpected instruments. The vocals are not something to write home about and are just about adequate. What takes the attention of the listener will be the way the band goes about playing famous melodies in almost unexpected methods. "Sad But True" is played at almost 1.5 times the speed of the original and it seems almost comical and quite unlike the eerie, creepy nightmare inducing song that it originally intended to be. The entire album has been given a heavy dose of Bluegrass/Country to it, and some of the melodies have gotten mangled in the process.
As I listened to the songs, I was struck by the fact that most of the songs that the band has picked for the album are some of my favorite ones. Which trilled me to bits. I quite liked the fact that a band has put its own spin on famous songs and pulled a rabbit out of the hat. At first instance I thought that they were pulling a Weird Al on the listener, but the more I listened, the more they impressed. The band is quick to distance itself from the "humor" tag that many would slap on them. They claim that the main agenda of the band is to have fun and entertain the audience while pushing themselves as musicians. The band has a busy schedule ahead of them with a tour of Europe and then they land in the USA for an extended tour with dates well in to march 2017. Oh, and they haven't heard from Steven Seagal, the action star, or from his management team, although they hope to meet him in the future because they "Like his movies"!<
