Grindstone
Cold Truth
COLD TRUTH is a four-piece Power Blues Rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. "Grindstone" is the band's third full-length album and contains twelve tracks. The band's classic Rock sound has roots in the 1970's and they stay true to their influences in this regard. The fuzzy guitars and slow, methodical beat of "Livin' Hard" definitely point to yesteryear. Vocally, Thane has a raspy, bluesy filled approach that has great impact in the higher ranges. If you want a visual to go along with the music, look no further than "No Sleet 'Til Surgis," the infamous biker gathering that this song seems perfect for. "Leave Your Leather On" is a good anthem for this style of music. The soul comes from the vocals and the dirty riff-age. It isn't anything you haven't heard before, but to the band's credit, they pour emotion into their performance.
The title track is aptly named, as the sleazy and down to earth sound match the slow, grinding pace. There are peaks of emotion here and there but the energy is subdued for the most part, or the devil is in the details as they say. But if you want some energy, "New Horizon" fulfills that hankering. The riff is a bit higher in key and this is just a song that has a lot of fun in it. Like the title, it's about new beginning. "Last Man Alive" is a smoke-filled bar track, drinking Bud and sippin' whiskey to end your evening with the company of friends. You don't really have to overthink this stuff. The twin guitars in "Give It Time" thicken up the song a bit, giving it a fat sound that a dancer could have a good time with.
Closing the album is the track "Free Man." It's the long song on the album, which is often the case with the closer, kind of one last attempt to push down the stamp one final time on the identity of the album. It's a slow, emotional piece, akin to their "Freebird." Overall if you are looking for something new, this probably would not be your go-to. But, it's honest, old fashioned Hard Rock fueled by very strong vocals and a sound that is meant to enjoy.
