Insanity - Visions of Apocalypse (Reissue) album cover

In the beginning, there were MASTER, POSSESSED and DEATH.

For sure, you can count these three bands as the forefathers of Death Metal (no, Death Metal didn't start on "Seven Churches", and besides all the respect and all the things said before, remind that DEATH had no chance to record an album until 1987, and the first MASTER album was to be released in 1985, but it was shelved due problems between the band and the label back then) and from the boiling cauldron from where the style came from, there are bands coming since those days.

And a veteran born in 1985 is back for some skull crushing and deafening music: the North American quartet INSANITY, from San Francisco, is causing extreme earthquakes with "Visions of Apocalypse", their new album.

They are an ancient band, so don't ask from them something that isn't a traditional and aggressive way into Death Metal, like all those bands from the eighties. No, it's not a sin, that their songs sound "out-of-date". No, they still have a aggressive and brutal way of playing, using all those features from earlier Death Metal made in the USA, like guttural vocals, aggressive guitar riffs and sickening solos, and a thunderous rhythmic kitchen. But there's some musical elaboration here, what can be an inheritance from Thrash Metal or maybe a more deeper comprehension that Death Metal don't need to be played in a so simple way as it was in the beginning. And their music is really good!

The sound quality is that one we could expect from bands with deeper roots in the past: aggressive, raw and harsh to a certain point. And this point I mean, is where the raw sound starts to damage the clearness we need to understand what they are playing. And on "Visions of Apocalypse", they don't pass it. So, be prepared for a brutal blow of Death Metal into your ears, but in a way you can understand everything.

Better beware, dear readers, because addicting songs as the vicious "Sacrefixion" (the beginning of the massacre, with nasty riffs and very good grunts. But there are some rhythmic changes that are excellent), the intricate and bitter ones "Mortification" (with changes on tempos from some aggressive and fast moments to some slower, technical and brutal slower ones) and "Dread the Dawn" (with some excellent guitars, even with some little moments where duets appears), the hooking "Disillusioned", the brutal and oppressive "Blind" (presenting extremely good guttural vocals and great rhythmic kitchen), and the destructive "Visions of Apocalypse" can make the walls of your houses tremble. And the three bonus songs are nasty versions from "Disillusioned", "Blind" and "Sociopath".

Well, it's a very good work, indeed.<
