Hello Metal Heads!! You haven't seen my name on a review in a little while, now I'm back to spread the CHAOS!! But I'm sure you don't want to hear about me and my blast beating psychosis, so here we have "The Crowning" which is the funkadelic sophomore album from DEAD TEACH THE LIVING.
I will say that it took me by surprise, especially as the first song progressed from a typical Metal sound to the groovy funky beats they add in. It certainly was not expected, but wow! The one song that really sticks out is the album closer; "I Feel Good (The Browning)", which if you haven't given the thought yet, is a JAMES BROWN cover. YES!! JAMES BROWN done all Metal like.
Now if that doesn't give you a good insight as to what the album sounds like, let me tell you this: These guys have completely mastered the concept. The music is groovy, it's funky, and it's plenty heavy. We're used to the ZOMBIE of funkadelic Metal, but these guys take an almost classic SLIPKNOT style and mix and mash it to create their unique sound.
The musicians are definitely on top of their game. They don't falter at all as they move from the heavy to the groovy. Everybody is right on target. Makes me proud to be a Metal Head in a world of computer generated horse shit. It's nice to see a band that doesn't take to the stereo types, though I'll admit it took a listen or two to really gain the full appreciation. Not because the music is bad, simply because it's not my usual forte.
As I was researching the info, I stumbled on a picture of the band sitting in a public men's room. It became quite obvious that I'm dealing with some goofballs. But then again remember: a JAMES BROWN cover. HAHA!
I certainly recommend "The Crowning" to those looking for something different. The groovy Death Metal will suck you in, and you won't know whether to head bang, or dance like a hippie. Maybe you can combine the two to make your dance banging as unique as the music.
So check out DEAD TEACH THE LIVING, and enjoy the artistry that the boys have (I'm sure) toiled restlessly over to perfect.
