Blackmail the Nation
Ultimate Holocaust
ULTIMATE HOLOCAUST is a Heavy Metal/Thrash metal band based out of Italy. Formed in 2012, this is the band's debut album, containing nine tracks.
I'd like the review to highlight some of the tracks. "U.L.T.I.M.A.T.E. (Protector of the World) is the opening track. The main riff is swift as the drums gallop along with the same pace. The vocals are more on the Death side than the Trash side in my opinion. "Out of Frequencies" features a little more bombast at the lower end of the spectrum. It's a bit slower in pace but hasn't lost any potency. The title track, "Blackmail the Nation," moves forward with perhaps some more intentionality. This song has a nice combination of rhythm and lead guitar parts in the main riff which works well. I like the more rhythmic feeling that the song has as it moves along and the chord progressions seem to hit the mark each time they change. "Gambler's Theatre" is a fairly straightforward number where the focus seems to be on the feeling of darkness and evil overall. The guitar solo is particularly fitting. From the opening barrage in "Pentagram of Terrorism," you can feel where this song is going. The pace is quickened, and there are some nice running guitar parts, adding some diversity to the way the music is presented. Closing the album is the song "Escape from Nightmare." It's not only the longest song on the album, but the slow, sludgy pace is also different from any of the other tracks. The main riff is almost droning, creating a feeling of hopelessness and despair.
For a band's first effort, it's an honest effort and has some real potential. The main area of disconnect might be that the vocals overpower the instrumentation. What I mean by this is that the vocals are really strong and if they could thicken up the other parts, there would be more there sonically as a whole.
