Coffins - Perpetual Penance album cover

Since early age, "Big Daddy" here is a fan from Japanese culture. Literature, films, mangas, TV series... Great stuff always comes from those lands. But of course those cultural rich lands gave us good Metal bands as LOUDNESS, ANTHEM, and on extreme Metal scene, bands as SIGH, ABIGAIL and WARHAMMER many others. Strangely, besides it's a rich Metal scene, few names are released out of Japan. And it's a true pity, because great names come from those islands. And to cause an earthquake worldwide and to unleash the fury of Emma-Oh hordes of chaos, from the depths of Yomi-no-kuni comes COFFINS, a furious Death Metal trio unleashing their violent fury with "Perpetual Penance".

The great and main feature on "Perpetual Penance" is that this album is compilation of some previous rare material coming from EPs, splits and live material. So it turns the work to get these rare stuffs become easier. But we can feel their brutal and more traditional insight on Death Metal, following the same way of bands like older DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, BENEDICTION, DISMEMBER and some touches from NAPALM DEATH. But go slow, dear nephews and nieces: they have personality.

Their musical insight uses a very simple technique, using slow tempos the greater part of time, and the final result is very good. The sound quality is somewhat nasty as a whole, but be careful: as "Perpetual Penance" is a compilation, the quality oscillates a lot (and it's truly dirty and raw on live songs). But to all of those used to Death Metal in its old form, of course this won't be a problem at all.

I truly point as the tracks that you must hear first the brutal and dirty "Hellbringer" (a bloody puke of musical violence, with very good drums in this not so fast song), "Drowned in Revelation" (very good bass guitar work, on a slower and bitter song), the thundering and contagious "Reborn" (great riffs, indeed), the funeral march "Axes Of Vengeance" (very good slow paced tempos, but with very good work done by drums and great grunts), and the aggressive "The Fog Of Burning". This legion of Death Metal demons came for you, so raise your heads and give a careful listening.
