Saint Spirit - Mea Culpa album cover

When foreign people think about Brazil, they first think of beaches and beautiful women. But here is a land full of History and not of all moments is beautiful. Even here, a multicultural country, we have our shameful moments, as some bands speak about, protesting against the chances of a second time of it. And now, it's time for the trio SAINT SPIRIT (from Rio de Janeiro) spread their gospel of protest against the Brazilian Holocaust with their new album, "Mea Culpa".

Besides all, this veteran Thrash Metal band evolved a lot musically. Now, they come with a more technical and abrasive approach of their music, using some Death Metal and Djent Metal influences on their work. No, the band didn't give up from their identity, but comes with a new and tasteful energy. They allied a heavy and bitter sound with melodic, aggressive and modern sound, having very good vocals (using a more aggressive insight of normal tunes), extremely good guitar riffs and harmonic solos, and a fantastic and heavy work done by bass guitar and drums (and we must say that Rodrigo sings and plays drums at the same time). And the result: a fantastic album! Having Clames Lucio (the band's guitarist) on the album's production (with all recorded, mixed and mastered in his studio), the result is a sound quality that is clear to the point of understand what each musical instrument is playing, but as heavy and bitter to the point of aching the ears of people not used to such level of aggressiveness.

The whole concept of the album is about the atrocities done on the mental hospital called Colônia de Barbacena, where insane innocent people were treated with cruelty and with no human rights, and where the death toll was more than 60,000 innocents. And the greater number of deaths was during the 60s and 70s of the last century! And let me tell you, my dear nephews and nieces: many times, the poor people were treated that way to die, and their bodies were sold to universities! A true abuse!

And "Mea Culpa" means "my guilty", an atonement used in many Christian religions for our flaws, and here is a statement for all those who claims to have Christian feelings, but never extend their hands to help. If this was the case, this bloodshed would never happen here. Hope it will never happen again...

Turning back to the musical side, "Mea Culpa" has some special guests: Frank Lima (MAIEUTTICA's vocalist) making the clean voices on "City of Roses", Daniel Monteiro (vocalist from FOLHAS DE OUTONO) on some vocals on "Bonsai" and Bruno Max (from PURITAN) on vocals on "Tortura".

"Release The Kraken" (a brutal and explosive song, with very good technique and great riffs), the slow and bitter "City Of Roses" (with very good vocals, both the harsh and the clean ones), the grooving and aggressive "Iceberg" (full of Djent Metal influences, with powerful guitars and heavy drums), the energetic "Tortura" (with its lyrics on Brazilian Portuguese, and with great riffs and bass guitar presence, that is a clear invitation for slam dancing and mosh), "Roger That" (with a modern insight, but being a dry and extreme blow in the face, having some abrasive riffs) and the enormous "Indestructible" (full of changes in tempos, some astonishing melodies and again great vocals and drums) can be named as the best ones in this perfect album.

A true and sad history, and a fine and great album!
