Melyra - Catch Me If You Can album cover

Well, every time we speak about Heavy Metal bands with girls on the lineup, sometimes we can hear some complains about "women playing Heavy Metal?", that are very disgusting words for some Metallians to say. I must remind these guys (the greater part of the complainers are the so called "old school" bangers, those they label themselves as "80 bangers", but 99% of the cases, are just kids that were born after the 90s. Please, grow up and don't disturb) that RUNAWAYS, GIRLSCHOOL and LITA FORD were (and are) strong names into Metal scene. And here on Brazil, names as NERVOSA, INDISCIPLINE, HELLARISE (besides there are three men on their lineup) are strongly fighting against this distorted vision of facts (for some, women are just for sex, and that's all). But an excellent name is joining these bands, and making a fantastic word, the quintet MELYRA, from Rio De Janeiro, that releases their first EP, "Catch Me If You Can".

They play a powerful and melodic traditional Heavy Metal, in the same vein of bands like IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST from their classic times. But don't have wrong or distorted ideas, my dear nephews and nieces: these girls have Metal in their blood, and their music sounds extremely full of personality, having very good and catching refrains, and is not something moldy, far away from this. An excellent vocalist that knows a lot how to use her voice, both on tender and on aggressive moments (even some guttural grunts appears sometimes), a fine guitar duo (using some very good melodies on riffs and solos), a strong and heavy rhythmic kitchen.

The sound production was done by Celo Oliveira, and he knew extremely clear how their music must sound: heavy and intense, but melodic. The quality is clear enough for you to understand what these girls are about with their music, but as well is heavy to the point to make some men blush with shame.

After "Beyond Good And Evil" (an instrumental introduction), comes the powerful "Nightmare #1" (full of great riffs, some grunts on backing vocals and a great performance from the vocals), and then, the hooking "Silence" (spitting very good guitar riffs down the throats of non believers). A beautiful, introspective and heavy ballad is what we hear on "Fly" (with some fine arrangements of vocals, and bass and drums are giving the right dose of weight). And on "Trip To Hell", we have a traditional Heavy Metal song with some elements from Modern Heavy Metal, with some more fast riffs and heavy rhythmic basis. But their best song is, undoubtedly, "Catch Me If You Can", a hooking and charming song with some guitars that really reminds IRON MAIDEN's work, but with a more personalized aggressiveness and fine vocals.

Oh, by the way, after the release of "Catch Me If You Can", the guitarist Alyne Carloto joined the band in the place of Maria Fernanda Cals (from INDISCIPLINE). Yes, this band is catching. After only one show, I became addicted, so you'll be as well!
