Tribulations of the Abyss
Kurnugia
Death Metal always shows good results, no matter what is happening on Metal scene worldwide. And new names arising is a proof that Metal can renew itself, keeping in mind it's past, working on present, for a bright future. And from Cleveland, Ohio (USA) come a fine quartet, KURNUGIA, with their debut work, the EP "Tribulations of the Abyss".
Their musical engagement is to a more traditional and oppressive way of playing Death Metal, with some technical aspects that sounds new and fresh, but with the two feet on the 90's Death Metal, especially bands like MORBID ANGEL and DEICIDE, in music as violent as they can play, with low grunts (reminds me a little the way of Steven Tucker sings), a solid and savage wall of guitar riffs, and a heavy and compact rhythmic basis. And their music has no hollow spaces. It's full, heavy and aggressive, besides, it appears a little with other bands.
A fine sound quality is presented, keeping the quartet sounding aggressive and heavy, but with a clear quality. Obviously, it could be better in some points (some riffs could have better guitar tunes sometimes), but it's not bad.
Just a 2 songs EP is not enough to provide a deeper analysis, but it's enough to get the idea of what they want to do with their efforts in the musical world: to deaf every ear not used to extreme music. "Plague Winds" (with a more mid tempo focus, and very good riffs) and "Diseased Angels" (with a slow beginning, then an explosion of speed and aggressiveness, with good low grunts, a heavy and strong bass playing along with a technical work from drums) shows a very good band that needs just to leave aside their musical influences and try to sail into the unknown to find their own sound and music.
For now, it's good, but they have a great potential, so let's hope that a future coming album can show what they really have inside their hearts.<
