Supreme Art Of Renunciation
Symphony Draconis
Due some attitudes that produces nothing good, the Brazilian Black Metal scene is passing through a very hard time, for these things (a lot of shit spoken, endless reclamations from other styles, a Hell on Earth made for nothing), Metal fans here prefers to stay away from the style. And it's a pity, for bands like SYMPHONY DRACONIS, coming from Porto Alegre (RS), has a lot of to show, as we can hear on their first album, "Supreme Art of Renunciation".
Following a more atmospheric way, as earlier DIMMU BORGIR, EMPEROR and SATYRICON works (without keyboards), but without losing the aggressiveness, they sound full of energy, in a dynamic way of doing Black Metal, but always with quality and polite arrangements. Great vocals, wonderful guitar work (great riffs, and they play good and melodic solos, a differential from the whole style), and an excellent rhythmic kitchen (drums and bass, for those who aren't used to "rhythmic kitchen" term).
Produced by the band along with Sebastian Carsin (who did the mixing and mastering as well), it sound very good, clean and heavy in a way not usual to Black Metal bands, enriching their work, but not tearing apart the style essence. The artwork is another great piece of art done by the designer Marcelo Vasco (who worked previously with BORKNAGAR, DIMMU BORGIR, SOULFLY and many other bands). Excellent, just like this.
In terms of music, their style is not conventional, for even being a Black Metal band. They really run away from models and patterns. So, be prepared.
Best moments: "Transcending the Ways of Slavery" (great work from drums and bass, and excellent guitar solos), "Eris Aeon" (a dynamic song, with fine harsh vocals), "Demoniac by a Divine Power" (a bit faster than the previous ones), "Ain Soph Aur", "Itzpapalotl" (these guitars are abusing of their right to be excellent), and "Seeds of Evil".
Indeed, Brazilian Black Metal is excellent, and SYMPHONY DRACONIS, along with PATRIA, THORNS OF EVIL, OCULTAN, DEATHPASS and DARKTOWER are the best names, just for one simple reason: instead of losing time talking, they prefer to use their energies to compose, play and record great songs. Just this one and nothing more.
