Originally from Valparaíso Chile, then relocated to Canada DEMONA's founding member Constanza "Tanza" Godoy Díaz began her foray in the moshpit in 2007 when she was only 17. She pursued a career in photojournalism and married her guitarist Gabriel "Gabrihell" Dufour in 2011, when he was still in RIOTOR. They have since divorced, but he remains an active member of this band. The toxic "Tanza" began her waltz and Totentanz at a young age, being the daughter of Jackie Godoy from DISTORSION and D.O.D. She was heavily steeped in the local Metal Milieu and also played in other bands, but chose to make DEMONA her main focus.
I have not heard the debut album "Metal Through Time", but it has received many accolades. It even had some guest musicianship from members of Germany's own WARRANT. This sophomore outing "Speaking With The Devil" is fast and loud, with many scorching riffs and vicious stabs. However speed for speed's sake does not always make for a good album. I would compare them to MORTILLERY and perhaps other Infernö Records acts like TYRANEX or LADY BEAST.
Tanza's vocals are not the best, and it is difficult to understand her at times. Her high pitch screams are not always well met either. She reminds me of the late Dawn Crosby with a hint of Debbi Gunn, Sabine Classen, Nicole Lee, or even what Jutta Weinhold did with ZED YAGO. A song like "The Sorceror's Escapade" is evidence of this. The music is also similar to EXTREME ATTACK who also have an exceptional young female guitarist in Renata Pacheco.
Tanza's brand of dirty speed Metal has its place, but I wish the songs were more infectious, with more power and energy. The blazing tracks are definitely fast and accelerated, though. Searing slices like "Malvenidos", "Demona", the title track, "Dirty Speed Metal" and "Mercenario" are surely built for speed and aggression. "Bad Boy" is an older cut re-opened, and reworked with a slight commercial approach, but with a wicked edge. "Strongest Than The Hardest Stone" is probably the most accessible offering, but even with its guitar noodling, the drowned-out chorus does little for me. I wish they had opted for a cover track, instead. Although, "Traitors" has its own poisoned touch.
Throughout all time Metal is still Metal, and Speed Metal kills! There is no doubt that some of the band's influences are across the seven continents, throughout the ages and '80s. The production is very old school too, which I am sure was deliberate. I salute her efforts and integrity, but she has a while to go before she joins the ranks of CRYSTAL VIPER, ELVENSTORM, IGNITOR, and their ilk. Bienvenidos!
