Dunkelnacht - Revelatio album cover

French Metal scene, for years, stayed in the deepest underground, for I couldn't listen to anything from there after the eighties, but since the coming of this new century, a lot of good names are appearing there. GOJIRA, L.L.N. Black Metal bands as MÜTIILATION and VLAD TEPES became more known, and now, another extreme Metal name appear: DUNKELNACHT, from Lille, with their new release, "Revelatio".

Tuning to their work, it's too clear that they follow modern extreme Metal tendencies, using (and abusing of) blast beats, mixing harsh and clean vocals, bass and drums forming a strong rhythmic basis (well worked, just to make things clear), making a music that sometimes is harsh and very fast, and other times more intense and introspective, but technical during all the time, sounding like a more aggressive and heavy CHILDREN OF BODOM, something of old works from DARK TRANQUILLITY and IN FLAMES appears here in there.

The album production is very clear, but heavy in the way that make all instruments listenable, but sounding aggressive that our ears can surely bleed if the volume is set in high.

The CD itself is very good as a whole, but we can point to some tracks as the best, as the furious "Emergent Primitive Constellations" (drums and guitars are doing a very fine work, especially in heavy and slow moments), the more worked and with excellent variations in tempos "Ashes from Stellar Oracles" (what good guitar solos and vocal work!), the more slower and introspective "Dissolved Fractal Esoterism" (with some more harsh moments. Introduced by piano and with some harmonic clean voices), the brutal and raw "Through the Reign of Lunacy" (with some good clean moments, and take a listen to the drums and bass work).

Obviously, the band can do better than this. Potential they have to do so, but are in the right side of the thing.

I would certainly like to hear more of these guys in a near future, so, stay wild and heavy.
