Death Rides A Horse - Tree Of Woe album cover

When I headed to discover DEATH RIDES A HORSE, or briefly DRAH, I realized that this band comes from Denmark and immediately I thought that it will sound like MERCYFUL FATE, which has long been one of the pioneers of the first wave of Black Metal, call it a force of habit. But the sound that comes out of this "Tree Of Woe" distorted all my prejudices.

This second EP comes after a demo "Death Rides a Horse" in 2009 and a first EP "Pantakrator" in 2010, and announced a collaboration with the French label Inferno Records, which is actually a package that includes two cassettes previously made, all by adding a new song "Domination Of Metal".

It is difficult to classify the musical style of the Danish quartet, but after two or three listening sessions, I began to feel a Heavy Metal vibe from the late of 70s and early 80s, with a clear influence of bands like ACCEPT or BLACK SABBATH. Adding an atmosphere of Stoner / Doom, wish is clearly distinguishable with slow riffs, heavy and mid-tempo writing tendencies of the two guitarists Jens Hollesen and Kenneth Engelsen. The very direct and powerful playing of the drummer Anders Madsen, adds more attack to each song. On the vocal duties, we find Ida Marcussen, and yes, a female singer who moves ahead with her voice full of personality and character, as in pieces like "For Those About To Die" or "Tree Of Woe". The group also dedicated the SCORPIONS with a remake of the song "Fly To The Rainbow" with is a success in my opinion. Do not forget, the very vintage production that immerses the album in context.

"Tree Of Woe" is a convincing EP with a selection of pieces that announces a true beginning, and prepares the way for the next opus.
