RUSSKAJA is another flash of creative awesomeness from Vienna that has taken Russian Folk music to a whole new level. Mixing elements of Jazz, Folk, and Thrash, they have put quite a creative and brutal spin on this traditional music, and turned into festive dance Metal for a new generation. Needless to say, it's quite good.

Each and every track is bright, rowdy and fun, the only exception is the final track, Sorry, a bluesy number that still maintains the albums overall passion. Georgij Makazaria's vocals are strong and captivating and are nicely showcased throughout the entire album. The guitars tend to be more support in comparison to the lively trumpet and violin, but still get their shine on during "Kartuli Vino" and "Surrealnaj". Bass is strong and upbeat and mixes quite well with the drums. Musically the album is fun, and I can imagine this kind of passion for dance would be intoxicating live. The recording is great, mixed well, and is just fucking swell. For those who love Folk Metal, give the album a chance, you may be surprised.

The genre may not be for everyone, and traditionalists may turn their nose up at this sort of concoction. Yet, somehow, I think RUSSKAJA is doing just fine. Grab a shot, turn up the volume and let yourself go. For a rating I would say 7 out of 10. Until next time, stay well, and live free!
