Home to Nowhere
Old Moon

From Bandcamp, "Born in the damp, brooding atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest, this is OLD MOON. Here to craft music that tells the tale of life's deepest sorrows. Depression, grief, loss of self and death are the keys that stitch these heart-aching lyrics together. Accompanied to feed the image, a beautiful orchestra fills the air, meeting a breath of guitar melodies entangling melodic death and post black metal together in solidarity. Binding a tense and resonating sound that strikes the mind and embraces the heart, this is OLD MOON." The album has seven songs, and "Between the Stars" is first. Akin to the title, the somber clean guitars create a feeling of weightlessness, as if you are adrift in outer space. Aggressive tones come in from there, with thick guitars, galloping drums, vocal screams, and some backing orchestral elements. The vocals bring an intensity with them for sure.
"My Name is Death" continues the sad, depressing feeling that settled in with the first song. It's another slow-mover with a lamenting quality that you can feel in your bones. "My name is death," he screams with authority. "Distance" features a heavy charge of drums with magnanimous strings, and it also carries an emotional weight that settles in the pit of your stomach. "A Rest to my Name" opens with delicate piano notes and backing choirs. A distorted riff enters slowly, carrying more emotion. That feature is key on the album so far. The smoke clears with a much firmer sound from there, and it's still devastatingly depressive. "Obsidian" begins much the same way and makes a quicker segue into deeper aggression. Another key feature on the album so far is how well they balance anger and despair. Each song also has a towering feeling, like you are looking up at buildings that touch the sky.
The title track is another hard slab of Black Metal that moves both with fury and confidence. It also seems to pick up steam as it moves, like a steam engine reaching cruising speed on the tracks. "Creations Undone" is the final cut and it grabs the bits and pieces from previous songs and casts them into one desperate sound. It also takes a detour at times, exploring more of the raging side of the album. I love the sound on the album, and it does indeed reflect what life must be like in the cold and wet Northwest. Besides the inherent aggression that is always present in the genre, the band counterbalances them with notes of deep sadness and despair. If one of these elements doesn't kick you when you are down, the other will.
