Colours Of Pain
Bloodred

Oh wow! I had never heard of BLOODRED before, and now I have listened to them for a few times in a row I can only say that this (by origin) German Blackened Death Metal band with founder and originator Ron Merz as the multi-instrumentalist within its ranks has left me in tatters. The man is furthermore assisted by the very well-known Dutch co-founder and drummer extraordinaire Joris Nijenhuis, who you might now from his participation with bands like for instance ATROCITY and LEAVES EYES. In 43:14 minutes they will try and convince you that the kind of music they make is of such a quality that it makes it almost mandatory for you to go and get their latest effort, their fourth studio album "Colours Of Pain". After having those few listens, I'm simply wondering how I have never come across them before now.
The reason I mention it this way is because I really like the wat that BLOODRED is able to mix good Old School Death Metal with proper Old Fashioned Black Metal. What it brought to me from the very start until the finish is the addictive construction of the riffs, the very controlled but also easily palpable tension and intensity that is to be found on "Colours Of Pain". It has that kind of quality that makes you just want to listen to this kind of Blackened Death Metal time and time again. The voices used are exactly what you would want to hear at the times they are being used, the guitars and bass give the music the body bit requires and the drums add the fullness and finishing touch it deserves.
You know what strikes me more than anything else? That is that the quality of the songs is outstanding from start to finish. There are no weak spots, there are no lapses in making your ears tingle, making your hairs stand on end and BLOODRED just keeps sending shivers down my spine. I have to admit that when I first started listening to "Colours Of Pain", I had in mind that it would be good, but nothing more than that. That was a preconception based on my past experiences with this kind of music, but there is no doubt that BLOODRED has blown those thoughts straight out of the water. Damn, this is good shit. I never thought I would say this about a Blackened Death Metal band, let alone album, but I can keep on listening to BLOODRED and "Colours Of Pain". And I most likely will.
