The Underworld (Reissue)

Evildead

As their second album, you can hear that EVILDEAD had learned from their debut album, that, although quite good, could have sounded better. That has been remedied on “The Underworld”, as the sound is just that bit fuller, just that bit more rounded.

EVILDEAD was a kind of force in Thrash Metal that didn't get the justice it deserved. Giving the world two world class albums in 1989 ("Annihilation Of Civilization") and 1991 ("The Underworld") they somehow didn't make into the big league, making them one of the underground's worst kept secrets. Why do I classify them this way? Because all the Thrashers knew of them, but due to the massive amount of new releases being available at the time EVILDEAD was left at the sideline by a lot of otherwise very interested people. Now, on 27 March 2026, both albums have seen their rerelease on CD, LP and for digital download, both including a number of bonus tracks. In this review I will be concentrating on the second album "The Underworld".

As their second album, you can hear that EVILDEAD had learned from their debut album, that, although quite good, could have sounded better. That has been remedied on "The Underworld", as the sound is just that bit fuller, just that bit more rounded. As for the music itself, it also has been given a bit more thought, making the songs just that tad stronger. At least, that's my opinion. I know that there will be those amongst us Thrashers that prefer the sound of the debut album. I have to admit that musically there isn't much difference between the two albums, so you'll still be able to hear all the influences and comparisons that I described in that review, only slightly less in your face. It all has been embedded into a bit more of an identifiable EVILDEAD sound. And still the masses didn't warm up enough to buy the "The Underworld" album when it came out in 1991.

As for the songs themselves, they have all that you would hope that you can get from a proper and 100% Thrash Metal album. The original length was some 42 minutes long, with a huge surprise included. That is the very respectable and well done cover of the SCORPIONS classic "He`s A Woman / She`s A Man". This only shows that these guys also knew about the history of Metal, gaining them extra brownie points.  Now the "The Underworld" stops at just over 50 minutes, due to the two live bonus tracks. They don't sound super, but they have a good enough production that it does give you an inkling at how impressive this band must have been on stage. If only i could have seen them back then.
