Per Amor Nymphae

Marlugubre

Overall, what I loved most about the album was how deeply I could feel the aggression rumbling in my stomach, and how brightly I could sense moments of beauty and hope. The two opposing styles shattered into one another, detonating a bomb of emotion together that could be seen and felt for miles away. It was more like poetic prose than a simple listening experience.

From Bandcamp, "Per Amor Nymphae" is deeply rooted in Greek mythology, in particular, it focuses on the mythical figures of the nymphs. The album evokes an introspective journey through ancient Greece. Stories like Orpheus and Eurydice are brought to life through sound, the primordial figure of Nyx from Hesiod's Theogony is also explored, alongside tales of Chloris and the tragic myth of Scylla and Glaucus. In this album, distorted, clean, and acoustic guitars intertwine throughout the album conveying romanticism, fragility, and a sense of timeless beauty, letting the music be a narrative tool rather than mere composition. A new element emerges with Serena's vocal presence, her voice blends naturally with the album's ethereal atmospheres, adding warmth, sweetness, and emotional intimacy. "Per Amor Nymphae" stands as a romantic and mythological sound voyage."

The album has seven songs, and "The Beloved Scylla" is first. The tones are very pretty out of the gate, but are soon accompanied by a thick and heavy slab of Black Metal. From there, it's a study in the contrasts that Black Metal offers…aggression and rage, tempered with melody and gentle passages. "Lips Scented Spring Roses" begins with solemn cello notes that transition quickly into another aggressive sound. The clean vocal passages are surrounded by dark storm clouds, but they preserver, and the gentle passages are absolutely magical. "She Nigh His Death" is as sad as it sounds, but there is also resolve buried deep within. No matter how dark and scary the room gets, there is always a light to guide you through…and that clean passage does just that. The clean vocals will make your heart ache.

"Caresser" is a short segue song, connecting the first half of the album with the second. The clean guitar tones are sad, but also gorgeous. "Undine on a Lake Garden" is another song that hints at life and then brings in a plate of death for you to consume. The harsh vocals are tortured and raging. "Iphigenia" brings a dark storm of wind and rain with it, and also some moments where you can follow the ray of light into the heavens above. Follow the clean vocals that illuminate the path. "Like a Dim Moonlight in Her Heart" is the final song, and I couldn't think of a more fitting title. The fire rages behind her, as she sinks down into her bed. But, the dim light in her heart is still there, barely holding on. Rage collides with hope in a full on spring towards the end. Just before declaring a victor, rage disappears.
