MetaForm

Dimholt

This was an excellent album. Although it’s steeped in the early traditions of the genre, there was just enough risk taking to please listeners with need for a wider range of sound, while not alienating the average fan of Black Metal. Their musicianship is strong, they followed their vision, and the songs were powerfully aggressive.

From Bandcamp, "MetaForm" is the third full-length album by DIMHOLT. Recording sessions took place in 2024, split between two locations: drum tracking was completed at a studio in Sofia, while the remaining instruments and vocals were captured at Opus Magnum Studio in Brussels, Belgium, under the experienced guidance of Déhà, who also handled mixing and mastering. The album's visual concept was brought to life by Bulgarian artist Silvi Ilieva Sinister Scenes, known for her evocative concert photography. The album has eight songs. The title track is first.  Scratchy, overly treble guitars lead the charge, and the song is high with aggression and darkness. "Radiance of Dying Light" is even darker and more sinister, and the vocals have a distinct snarl to them. The bottom end rumbles like an engine kicking over, and the band flexes some muscles and shows their musicianship.

"Totem" is a slower moving song at first and none of that trademark intensity has lessened so far. Soon enough it's off and running, stomping the earth beneath its feet like the boots of an army of undead.  "The Horrors of Maddened Eyes" is another dark offering, and just when you think the band has reached the bottom of the cave, they dig deeper, and uncover demons that should have been forever buried. "To Embrace Profound Stillness" features slower, more crushing riffs, and a pocket full of power and confidence. The sound drops around the midsection, to clean tones that are absolutely dreadful, before the onslaught returns with renewed vigor. "Tomb of Molten Stars" moves with a full arsenal of guitars that some might call a wall, and the constant presence of them assures no one can break in.

"Tapestry of Shapeless Eternity" is the final track, and it's another exercise in intensity. It also combines anger and rage with despondence and despair. The bass work is also excellent, and it's an instrument you don't often hear in Black Metal. This was an excellent album. Although it's steeped in the early traditions of the genre, there was just enough risk taking to please listeners with need for a wider range of sound, while not alienating the average fan of Black Metal. Their musicianship is strong, they followed their vision, and the songs were powerfully aggressive.
