Old Night - Mediterranean Melancholy

Old Night

The songs are clearly written and recorded by a band that has been together for quite some time. Everything on “Mediterranean Melancholy” is rather lengthy, but not once are you wondering when the song is going to end. There are no boring pieces, you will hear no fillers being used by OLD NIGHT, be it short or long.

OLD NIGHT is a Melodic Doom Metal band from Rijeka in Croatia, and they have been making music since 2015. This is my first encounter with them, even though they have released three albums before. Therefore you can rest assured that I haven't heard "Pale Cold Irrelevance" (2017), "A Fracture In The Human Soul" (2019) and "Ghost Light" (2022).  So, my first time with OLD NIGHT is the album that was released on 21 November 2025, "Mediterranean Melancholy". And what makes me smile right from the start is that the sound on this album is impeccable. Everything sounds clear, it is so transparent that you do hear every strike, every hit. And that is quite the relief, as it gives me the opportunity to really listen to and rate the music on "Mediterranean Melancholy" on its merits.

Before I get to the musical side of OLD NIGHT, I have to mention singer Jacob Spencer. His voice is clear and pleasant when he uses his clear voice. Doesn't matter whether he goes higher or lower in octaves, he just sounds brilliant. but I don't want to not mention his grunting and growling, as those sound just as impressive, as they have the menacing depth and level of despair that you are looking for when listening to Doom Metal. Musically it is quite clear that OLD NIGHT is a band that has been together for quite some time, they sound very comfortable with each other, making the music sound very cohesive, but also Melodic when possible, more desolate when asked and desperate when needed, making the Doom Metal references on "Mediterranean Melancholy" shine whenever they can.

The same goes for the songs themselves. They are clearly written and recorded by a band that has been together for quite some time. Everything on "Mediterranean Melancholy" is rather lengthy, but not once are you wondering when the song is going to end. There are no boring pieces, you will hear no fillers being used, be it short or long. No, OLD NIGHT  have it in them to write songs that will pique your interest all the time. OLD NIGHT have been able to produce five songs that make sense, that sound good and that have a certain quality that will keep you listening to the album time and time again. If anything, I feel that even though "Mediterranean Melancholy" clocks almost 44 minutes, it could have been longer and I still would have enjoyed all of it.
