The newest album from Portuguese metal band Inhuman, Gloriae,is very unique to say the least. With gothic undertones and orchestral elements interspersed throughout the run time of the album, it was very enjoyable. It's a very melodic and interesting album exploring themes of glory, struggle, and resilience. The opening tracks of the record, Absent Glory, starts out with the voice of an opera singer layered in the background accompanied by an interesting drum beat. The guitars kick on heavy and energy exudes from this track. The vocalist of this band sounds very good as well. It's a very gothic, progressive sound but has throwbacks to the 80s heyday of metal. A standout on this album is Seed of Ancient Hate. It's a song that starts out quiet and slow before the intense riff and drum combo kicks in out of nowhere. The vocalist of the band is very versatile going from clean singing to harsh screaming almost effortlessly. The song is slow building for sure, but it has a very good pay off, as well as a cool guitar solo at the back end of it.
Illuminate the Pain begins with an intense down tuned bass riff before the drums kick on. I love the melodic nature of this song while still remaining very heavy. The instrumentation builds upon each other to create something great. And again, the vocalist of the band, Pedro Garcia, is very impressive with his inflections on his voice and how his screams sound, soaring above the excellent instrumentation from the rest of the band. Conspirato starts out as a very intense song and heavy song and it continues that trend the entirety of the way through. It's very melodic while still retaining that gothic and progressive metal sound that this band has cultivated over the years. Everything about the composition of this song works for me especially when Pedro says "Cold nights can't take the sun forever" which is talking about his own struggles.
Visionary State, the final track off the album, is a great back end track and a perfect send off to a great metal album. I love the intensity of the instruments in the beginning that turns into groovy riffs and heavy drums. There are just so many elements here that works extremely well and the guitar riff at the end of the song perfectly encapsulates the energy that the band was going for here.
Barcelona's own Inhuman has everything. A gothic progressive metal band with old school 80s flair and a cinematic operatic likeness to it that just works extremely well. Pedro's voice just gives a very 80s tinted thrash metal flair while still retaining what makes the band great and unique.
