Light and Desolation, the newest album from doom metal band Blizaro, is nothing short of weird and bizarre, but oddly enchanting at the same time. Now, admittedly, it's not necessarily my thing. It moves a little bit too slow for my liking at times. The lyrics, which drench the listener with dark and horror themes, work for me because horror is one of my favorite genres. The opening track of this album, The Last Winter, is very slow and very plodding. I was skeptical at first upon listening to this bizarre openers because of how weird and different it is. Quietly strummed electric guitar with some odd vocal accompaniments made this track very interesting for sure. I'd say it was my least favorite song on the album. The song bleeds into the second track, Fifth Key, which is a much more upbeat metal song than the aforementioned opener. It kicks off with a loud guitar riff, and the guitars never let up. Once the song starts fast, the guitars slow down, as is normal for Doom metal, and the vocals kick on. It's another weird song, but I like it a lot more, especially the deep bass tones which are layered beneath the powerful vocals of John Gallo. I will say this song is more of an experience than a song. The slow building nature of this track creates a dark atmosphere with the drums, guitars, and synths melding perfectly together, complementing the song brilliantly.

Silver Tower starts out quietly but then the loud guitars kick in. It's another slow paced song with some operatic elements. John's voice is very interesting and dark tinted - which makes sense given the dark lyrics this band plays around with. It's a very dream like song featuring beautiful clean vocals perfectly juxtaposed with guttural screams which pierce the listener ears amid the screaming guitars and slow building drum work. There are definitely fantasy elements among this song; it's a track about struggles, but finding beauty in that struggle. The synths and keyboards add a haunting layer to the song that really worked for me. Glare of Light and Desolation has a few twangy guitar sections which reminding you of a country song before the rest of the song kicks in. The track is really a showcase in the drum work, which is more prevalent here than it is in some of the other parts of the album. The drumming here is phenomenal, every pummeling beat working well, contrasting with the chugging guitars layered beneath the great vocalist performance from John.

Warriors of a New Land is probably my favorite song of the album. With rich synths that really add to the experience, and a sense of fantasy and adventure throughout the song, this one really is good. It's a little bit of a faster song too, talking about facing the darkness. The riffs in this song are out of this world, and I love John's vocals on here. It's more of a fantasy power metal song I'd say, a song men would ride into battle too. Overall, this album starts off shaky, but I actually began to enjoy it more as I listened to it. A very complex, well thought out record dealing with important themes of the human condition.
