Nemofilista

Tanvald

Much of the album is devoted to the building of a towering atmosphere, and the band does that quite well. They talk about themes of forgotten sorrow, and cold landscapes, and that is exactly what I hear. It’s like a raging blizzard in middle of the arctic circle that lets up at the end just enough for you to see beams of sunlight.

"Nemofilista" combines the solitude of misty forests, where every gust of wind carries whispers of forgotten sorrow, with the raw emotions of black metal. Walls of cold guitars, distant screams, and moments of quiet melancholy embrace the darkness while finding beauty within it. The album has six songs, and "Zármutek" is first. Soft piano notes lead off the song, and they are a bit sad. A somber voice enters, followed by a thick guitar riff and tortured vocals screams, but the melody remains. I'm not sure which is more pronounced…the loud twang of the treble riff, the vocal screams, or the melody of they keys, but they work in a nice balance.

"Nemofilista" begins with clean guitar tones, thick with melancholy, and reverb. Whispers follow, and they hint at something else just beyond what you can see…it's comforting, and frightening at the same time. "Otupĕlý" has another soft entrance, and one thing that the band does very well is hold a level of tension in the music. Like the thick fog of morning, it is difficult to cut through it. The sound nearly drops from existence altogether, but that tension remains strong. In walks a distorted riff and vocal screams, but they don't take over the sound. "Vztek" is another song with a gentle, but very deep opening sequence. A storm builds in the background, until a thick, harrowing riff takes over, with more screams.

"Touha" enters with another thick riff, and it sounds like the mids are turned all the way up. A bouncy rhythm follows, and more tortured screams. Smooth tones move the song forward from there, but they are very somber. For me, it speaks of reflection, contemplation, and perhaps regret. "Oddych" is the final offering. It has hollow, distant guitars, and a feeling like the walls are closing around you. However, hopeful tones emerge out of nowhere, like a solitary flower opening in the dead of winter. After the veritable beat down of depression, hope can indeed spring eternal.
