El despertar dels morts
God’s Funeral

Hailing from Catalonia, comes Doom/Death Metal band GOD's FUNERAL. This newest album from the quartet has five songs. The opening song is a 13-minute beast...and it rattles the ground and shakes the village like a giant awakening from his slumber. The pace is slow, the guttural are horrid, and the doom is vital. The violin notes add an interesting twist, but they almost seem out of place in the song to me. They work better when the song changes to clean tones. The song drags on for what seems like days, weeks, even months, and this kind of sound will wear you down. "Itaca" begins with a similar pace and tones, but the bass notes by themselves sound like evil in the form of an instrument. There are violin notes once again, and they still seem out of place. Maybe that is intentional…the contrast that is.
"La processo de les ombres" is a precession of sorts, especially in the leading drums that sound like an army going to war in the 1700s. The distorted riff that follows is once again accompanied by violin notes. The seem to provide the sorrow along with the anger. "El despertar dels morts" is another song with a similar pace and sound, and four songs, in, you could expect a least a little diversity, but the band seems to prefer to keep things pure for the genre. Again come the violin notes, and I get the use of the instrument in this genre, but they just don't add a whole lot for me. "Fossa comuna" closes the album. Clean tones lead off the song, and they are very solemn. For me, they are a reminder that the pain you endured during the first four songs will linger for your lifetime.
Overall, this was a solid album in the steep traditions of Doom/Death Metal. It wasn't anything overly original, but you get what you would expect here, and that is fine. The slow pace and near-death vocals kick you when you are down, and stomp on your head to make sure it stays there.
