A Break of the Wide Valley

Basarabian Hills

During the day, the forest can be a welcomed and warming place…a place where someone can connect with nature, a place to rest among the trees, plants, and even wildlife. But at night, it can be quite the opposite. This album encapsulated both of these opposing feelings quite well, and it leaves the listener enveloped in the deep mysteries of the forest.

Not much is known about this Black Metal band. On their Bandcamp page, they tag Ottawa, Canada, but on their Facebook page, they made a post about supporting Ukraine from Moldova. Perhaps they are an international act. In any case, they seem to have but one member, named Spirit of the Forest. The album has three songs, and "Bird's Eye View" is first. Hopeful, melodic tones lead off the song, with smooth background ambiance and a pattern of light bell strikes. Are you sure this is Black Metal, I ask myself? In come the harsh vocals, and now I am clued in. Although they bite with the vigor of the cold north, the music remains fun, and even playful.  Birds chirp, until that cold wind enters again, then they are silent.

"When the Wind Blows Over the Hills" enters with rolling drums and a bit of Dungeon Synth type keyboards, and tension is raised. Voices are carried on the wind, but they are almost too silent to make out. You continue forward with a bit of trepidation. There are occasional peaks of fright here and there, but the tension is drawn out throughout the song. The wind carries the voice away, and it's replaced with a much warmer feeling. Still, there is a feeling of the unknown in the song, and that either scares people who are closed off, or welcomes people who are OK with surprises. The title track is the final song, and smooth tones are ushered in. There is still a bit of mystery, but the cold winds have diminished. Warm, long keyboard songs comprise the song.
