Vattenkrafternas Spel

Vintersorg

What Vintersorg always had a good knack for is writing good songs that really fit what he is trying to say. And I can tell you that on “Vattenkrafternas Spel” he has been able to do that once again, giving VINERSORG another strong piece of slab with which they hopefully be able to conquer even more souls than they have until now.

The Swedish band VINTERSORG (Winter Sorrow) has always been on my radar, just not the forefront. Their brand of Folk Metal mixed with (mainly) Black Metal, Progressive Metal and Heavy Metal is just something that you don't hear too often. Plus, the way that the band has constructed it all really works. Singing in Swedish does add to the mystical atmosphere that VINTERSORG has always portrayed. And if you wish to know, the name of Vintersorg himself is Andreas Hedlund. After a hiatus of eight years, it is time for VINTERSORG to make a reappearance. On 26 September 2025 it is time for "Vattenkrafternas Spel" to be the eleventh time the band is giving us something to listen to, enjoy and discuss. The first song "Efter Dis Kommer Dimma" starts the 61:08 minutes long album furiously. What is quite imminent when you get further along the songs is that VINTERSORG does like to use intros and sometimes even outros. That is okay, but it does hamper the flow of "Vattenkrafternas Spel" as a whole. What it does is break the vibe that you have gotten yourself into whilst listening, requiring you to build it up again in the next song. Like I said, that is okay, but it will not be to everyone's taste. But let us not be distracted by that, but concentrate on how VINTERSORG is able to make all the different kinds of Metal work as one on "Vattenkrafternas Spel". The intervals and breaks sound natural, the way the singing is intertwined into the music is almost magical, and those elements make that it doesn't matter how Heavy or Soft a passage or part is, it just sounds right. What Vintersorg always had a good knack for is writing good songs that really fit what he is trying to say. And I can tell you that on "Vattenkrafternas Spel" he has been able to do that once again, giving VINTERSORG another strong piece of slab with which they hopefully be able to conquer even more souls than they have until now. As for singing in the native tongue; brilliant. Doing this gives Vintersorg the possibility to express his emotions in just the right way., with the right intonations and atmosphere. In cases like these I really don't care that I don't have a clue what VINTERSORG is trying to say, but just undergo and thoroughly enjoy what the band is giving me on "Vattenkrafternas Spel".
