Nebulous Womb of Eternity

Thorn

A fine Death Metal release of this North American one-man-band.

Death Metal boundaries were solidified in a way that is hard to be free to create sometimes. It happens because many musicians want to keep things into the limits set in the past as possible, and some want to have an Old School Death Metal outfit, thus evading anything different. There are good and bad bands doing it, and THORN (from Phoenix, Arizona, USA) is in the group of good ones, as heard on "Nebulous Womb of Eternity", its fourth full-length. Daniel Bonofiglio signs the mixing and mastering of the songs, making things sounds as brutal and oppressive as possible, thus shaping the classic musical appeal of the band into a modern and defined outfit. The final result is truly good, besides a set of better instrumental tunes could be used sometimes. And the sickening artwork of Arifullah Ali for the cover shows what kind of band the fan is dealing with. Besides using a classic Death Metal (or traditional Death Metal, if you prefer) outfit, the work of Brennen (the only member of the band) can't be put into an Old School Death Metal trench due the brutal elements used sometimes. It uses a classic approach, with many clichés being used wisely to create a form of music that can't be said new for one side, it's not bad on the other side. It's truly good, full of energy and with very good instrumental parts, with preference for slow tempos (besides some faster parts can be heard, as on some moments of "Quartersawn Remains") that can be depicting influences of Doom Death Metal on the band's music, and with sickening and oppressive moments. It's clear that "Ooze Maelstrom", "Entombed in Chrysalis", "Quartersawn Remains", "Zombifying Mold", "Haunting Gale", "Gloaming Corporeal Form" and "Nebulous Womb of Eternity" are very good songs and will have a grasping appeal for Death Metal addicted fans, but the sensation that anyone can have after hearing to the album is that the band can do even better than is shown, a matter of maturing a bit more. "Nebulous Womb of Eternity" is a good release, and shows a band with a great potential to be turned into music in the future. But THORN deserves some applause for its efforts, indeed.
