Hospital Lens

Pulpit Vomit

What surprises me most is that, except for the opening song, I was quite at ease with all the music on offer here. It might be an Extreme Metal album, but I feel that “Hospital Lens” has a lot going for it in the short time it has to impress.

Sometimes people make mistakes. I did when I requested to be the one to review the new PULPIT VOMIT album. I always say not to hand me extreme Black Metal or Grindcore, and the latter definitely does come to life on this album. The band is definitely not my usual cup of tea, but is an Extreme Metal band from California. PULPIT VOMIT have been making rather disturbing noises since 2022 and have thus far stayed clear of the public, except for releasing singles along the way. Until now, that is, as “Hospital Lens” is the debut full length album, which will cost you 16:06 minutes to listen from start to finish. The EPK that comes with the music describes the band as a juddering detonation of the walls of reality, a stun grenade of incredibly intense creativity that blasts you out of your comfortable existence and straight into the nightmarish imagination of Seth Metoyer. Well, if they say so, I believe them.

“Hospital Lens” opens with the wild Grindcore assault of the second single “Razor Jaw” (1:21 minutes), a horrifying vision of broken teeth and wires. Again, a quote from the EPK. But it fits. Thankfully after this onslaught it gets a little more organised, a little less extreme, making me liking what I hear. The second song of the album, “Ghost In The Bedroom Closet” (1:05 minutes) is one of the singles that PULPT VOMIT released in 2022, and the only one of their early days that is featured on “Hospital Lens”. The other single is "The Filth" and this is a pure Death Metal assault. Fast, furious and bloody gore to the touch. Plus, at 2:49 minutes, the second longest track of the album. And yes, it does what it says, it gives you a lot of filth in only 169 seconds. What does surprise me is the fade out at the end of the song. Didn’t see that one coming the first I listened.

The rest of “Hospital Lens” is just as extreme as the songs already mentioned, and in that respect I for one am glad that PULPIT VOMIT doesn’t even need 1000 seconds to fill what in their eyes is enough to be called a full length album. What surprises me most is that, except for the opening song, I was quite at ease with all the music on offer here. It might be an Extreme Metal album, but I feel that “Hospital Lens” has a lot going for it in the short time it has to impress. And that’s why I am rating this as a good album, which makes me surprise even myself!
