Falling Through Stars
Laurenne & Louhimo

A collaboration brings two very talented and authentic female singers together to create what can only be described as a powerhouse of two singers, both from Finland as well being influenced also by the same musicians too. NETTA LAURENNE is one of the two vocalists, she has been in previous bands such as AORTHA, BLACK SUN as well as SMACKBOUND whereas, NOORA LOUHIMO the second vocalist, has come from previous band like BATTLE BEAST, RASKASTA JOULUA and was also an ex-member for live shows with KAMELOT. These two vocalists actually teamed up with one another as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, they shared a lot in common in terms of influences and coming from the same regions of Finland.
So once the two singers got together, a brand new chapter in their lives unfolded which brought them to working hard together on what would be their first and debut album titled THE RECKONING, which was released in July 2021. This was a pretty remarkable and real headbanger of an album, with killer guitar riffs, heavy rock ‘n’ roll drums and both singers have similar vocal ranges, that certainly makes them one of the exciting & upcoming female fronted bands. This album was released with Frontier Records and includes some great songs but this was just the start, they are back now, as they have released their second studio album titled FALLING THROUGH STARS released in April of this year.
So it’s a pleasure to get myself stuck into this new album beginning with “Falling Through Stars” the album title also, which opens with an atmospheric intro building as guitars also join with a short crescendo of its own. The vocals have a great rhythm as drums, bass guitar plus the rest of the band come in, the words spoken so well as guitar plays a bouncy pattern to match the vocals snazzy approach. I can safely say that both vocalists have such identical singing styles, it is hard to pinpoint any differences, the melodic rock elements really do come to life with drums and lead guitar showing what they are made of. A great opening track then goes into “Damned” as we hear a very cool drum intro before lead guitar slides into place for some melodic playing also.
Vocals come in with a burst of energy, as the drums keep a tight rhythm going, but in the verse, the pace quickens which certainly works and gives the track a nice touch. We can hear more from keyboards as the 80’s influences in the singer's songwriting process comes to the fore here with some tasty soloistic lead guitar bliss. The track has great clarity and focus, even the final vocal section that extends on, has some serious vocal range too, so jumping straight into the next track which is “To The Dark”, another kick in the teeth of an intro, so cool and melodic. The flow and timing of this track with drums is different but works so well to allow the lead guitars and vocals to let themselves go with total freedom.
Some more epic guitar solo work is fantastic and the vocals add a real feisty and sassy side to this track. “All For Sale” comes next with a more acoustic intro, vocals singing so high and flying like a bird in the sky, definitely you can hear an 80’s pop theme here. The guitar allows the vocals to achieve those notes, but they pull back also so they don’t mask what the guitar is doing, the track is certainly simple enough and so much more ambient than the previous tracks. Even when both vocalists are in, they fit so well together, but nevertheless onto the next track which is “The Cradle” as we hear more sombre and gloomy guitar playing but it suits the track for sure.
The vocal lyrics have that sassy approach again, guitars are not as rhythmic, but more ambient perhaps picking string notes than strumming, drums keep it simple enough with straight-forward patterns as the vocals join together later in the track before some guitar solo playing once more. So nothing too complicated in this track and certainly more of a different theme, maybe more gothic and darker mood to say. “Rotten Gold” is up next with a pretty hard rock ‘n’ roll rhythm with some solo drumming also to add to the mix. The vocals reach as far as they can as they have done so well, the lead guitar additional instruments add such a very original tone, maybe more of a blues rock feel in the guitars and drums, vocals use this to become more comfortable.
An instrumental section comes as lead guitar kicks this off, vocals coming and going, but it is lead guitar that steals the show here as drums also support appropriately. Vocals and lead guitar take the last section, with full commitment as we head into the next track which is “FTS” as we hear lead guitars coming in. Drums build a crescendo once lead guitar plays the intro, then vocals come in, as they raise the rooftops with high end vocal notes and softer notes, as well as some backing vocals shouting the title of the track as it is an abbreviation. Lead guitars grab onto the solo riffs they play and show the listener what they can do, some serious string bending notes and vibrato, this comes up in the background towards the end also.
Backing vocals reappear, as the whole band engages in a diminuendo as the vocals close out the track, now into the next track which is “Let The Light Be Free” as we hear thick and grunge style guitars sounding so distorted too. Vocals come in as the lead guitar line doesn’t change at all, so the tonality of the track has a lot of density and depth to it with lead guitar and bass guitar, the tempo is slow so that the instruments have more clarity. Then a sudden outburst from lead guitars and vocals, for some heavy duty rock ‘n’ roll rhythms, the contrast between this chorus and the verse is certainly remarkable, then there are some solo riffs by lead guitar as the drums support before vocals come back before fading out again.
As guitar slows down then we can hear the next track which is “Loud And Clear” as slow guitar plays and vocals come in gently as they allow the mellow guitar riff play, this track is almost like a soft rock lullaby, flowing so smoothly and angelic. Lead guitar once more into a solo section as bass guitar and drums support, before vocals come back to the fore, as they close out on a very long sustained note as we head into the next track. “Wait” as we hear a slow but cool rhythm from drums and lead guitar, a very gloomy theme at first, guitar especially portraying this atmosphere, drums playing simple patterns so vocals and guitar can stand out. Vocals raise the bar high in the chorus, but pulls back for the verses as we hear a solo part played by lead guitar a little later on in the track.
A straight-forward beat followed by lead guitar, drums and keys, as we now come to the final track which is “David Bowie & Clyde” a gorgeous acoustic guitar part being played, as we hear those two vocal lines joining in, responding to each other like a conversation or dialogue between the two singers. We can hear a stirring sound in the background, lead guitar by the sounds of it but they play gently and strum some quiet notes, both female vocals come together at the same time towards the end of the track, singing in perfect harmony. So that concludes the album, it has been such a pleasure to review these two talented singers from Finland.
I can safely say there is a great deal of variety of themes, across the album, some heavier than others and all set at a great pace or tempo, so there is no chance of the individual instruments becoming entangled into one another or masking each other. I would certainly recommend these female singers, they are truly awesome to listen to and they definitely kick ass, they have that sassy attitude and really put themselves out there to be heard, I am sure they will be back again in the near future, with yet more stunning music.
